Previously, Ms. Vi Thi Ngan's family in Co Noi commune, Mai Son district, Son La province grew corn and sugarcane, but the economic efficiency was not high. Since 2020, joining the Van Phuc safe vegetable production cooperative, Ms. Ngan has been taught safe vegetable growing techniques. Once she had the knowledge, Ms. Ngan's family converted 5,000 m2 of garden land to grow off-season vegetables such as cabbage, cucumber, and squash. Although it requires higher techniques and the care process is more difficult, in return, off-season vegetables are easier to sell and have higher prices, earning about 200 million VND each year.

According to Ms. Ngan: "I find that vegetables bring very high economic efficiency, every 3-4 months I can harvest a crop, compared to perennial fruit trees that can only be harvested once a year. To create clean and safe vegetables, I focus on using biological pesticides to spray instead of using chemical pesticides, using biological pesticides ensures safety for consumers."

As for Mr. Lo Van Vinh, in Co Noi commune, 4 years of participating in the cooperative has helped him change his way of thinking and working. From traditional farming, he now only produces according to market demand. With 2,000 m2 of land, Mr. Vinh combines growing squash and pumpkin for easy care. Just counting the squash crop alone, Mr. Vinh earned nearly 100 million VND. Since switching to growing vegetables, his family's economy has improved significantly.

"Growing vegetables and fruits brings a more stable income than growing sugarcane and corn. I gradually learn from growing vegetables. I go to see other gardens and learn from them and then apply them to my garden. For example, when I grow squash, it's very clean. I don't spray any pesticides, I just spray the surrounding area to repel fruit flies," said Vinh.

Safe vegetable production is not only the goal but also the destination of the Van Phuc safe vegetable production cooperative, Co Noi commune, Mai Son district, Son La province. After 4 years of operation, the cooperative has always been a pioneer in the production of safe vegetables and off-season vegetables, meeting market demand. With an area of 11 hectares, each month the cooperative supplies the market with dozens of tons of vegetables and fruits such as squash, pumpkin, Chinese cabbage, cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. The products produced are consumed as soon as they are produced, creating motivation for the cooperative to follow the direction of safe vegetable production.

Ms. Lo Thi Thuy, Director of Van Phuc Safe Vegetable Production Cooperative, shared: "To build a safe raw material area, our cooperative mainly uses decomposed manure, still uses chemical fertilizers but less, mainly organic fertilizers and biological pesticides. Since changing the way we do things, our output has increased, the appearance is more beautiful, the soil retains its looseness, unlike when we used chemical fertilizers like in previous years."

Taking advantage of the flat land area and favorable irrigation water, many cooperatives and households in Co Noi commune, Mai Son district, Son La province have gradually switched to developing vegetables and short-term crops with a total area of over 200 hectares, many vegetable areas are produced according to VietGAP standards, creating convenience in product consumption, increasing value in agricultural production.
