While trying to leave the country in turmoil, the character Mia suddenly goes into labor and has to give birth in a container drifting at sea, in the movie "Nowhere".
Directed by Albert Pintó, the film follows Mia (played by Anna Castillo) and her husband Nico (Tamar Novas) as they flee a troubled country to illegally immigrate to Ireland. They lose all their possessions, including their wedding rings, to get into a shipping container.
During the move, Nico was pushed to another place. As for Mia, she was lucky to escape death, while the rest of the people on the container were killed by the rebels. But the bad luck did not stop there, on a stormy night, Mia fell into the sea with the container. At this time, she had to find a way to survive.
The work highlights the strong spirit of human life in all circumstances.
With a duration of 90 minutes, the film leads the audience to follow the process of a mother overcoming hardships to protect her child. In the middle of the vast ocean, there were times when Mia thought she had to give up because of the hardship. But when she felt the baby kicking in her belly, maternal love gave Mia the strength to become stronger.
Mia’s escape is also a path to find a new future for her family. The work not only tells a story of survival but also incorporates social issues such as genocide and illegal immigration in Europe. Mia and her husband were forced to leave their country due to the civil war, which resulted in the massacre of many people - including women and children. Risking their lives is the only way for them to survive, and it is also fraught with danger. Among the refugees, Mia is not arrested but faces great obstacles that challenge her courage.
Mia represents the image of a resilient woman who does not surrender to fate. She is bold and intelligent when dealing with unexpected situations. Mia does not want to lose her child, because she made a mistake that caused her first child to die. This became an obsession throughout her journey.
The relationship between Mia and Nico brings a lot of emotion to the film. The filmmaker shows the bond between the two through their support and encouragement through phone calls. The scene where Nico says goodbye to Mia and her mother moved many viewers. The family was separated by war, Nico did not have the chance to see her child born, and Mia could not reunite with her husband.
The baby is about to be born, which is the motivation that helps Mia (right) overcome difficulties and fight the harshness of nature.
The work has a fast pace to bring suspense. Most of the film takes place in one setting and one actor but it is not boring. The turning points are arranged continuously, one after another. Mia struggles with the awkward situation, with only a little food left, a few boxes of phone headphones, plastic boxes, a jacket, a drill and a folding knife. Mia uses these items in each situation, such as the headphone cord is woven into a fishing net, the plastic box is turned into a life buoy.
Anna Castillo's performance as Mia impressed the audience. She exudes recklessness and bravery on the outside but inside she is filled with pain and loneliness. Many difficult scenes require physical and mental strength, such as pushing a crate and drilling through a container.
Before Nowhere, films about the survival genre in nature had resonated and attracted audiences such as Cast Away (2000), Life of Pi (2012) or The Revenant (2015). Nowhere showed the development in increasing the difficulty of this film genre. The character not only struggled with the ocean but also had to learn how to live in a cramped space, contained in a container.
Mia (played by Anna Castillo) is deeply developed and receives many positive responses from the audience.
The film received many comments from experts. Cinemanía highly appreciated Anna Castillo's acting, saying that the film attracted audiences thanks to its situational arrangement.
Film Threat's film editor Brian Tallerico said the director made some mistakes in his direction. Albert Pintó tried to dramatize Mia's situation to make the audience cry, or the death of his eldest son was not made clear, making it difficult for viewers to sympathize with the character.
