(BGDT) - On the afternoon of May 9, despite facing an unprecedentedly harsh competition schedule at the 32nd SEA Games due to changes by the organizing committee, with the spirit of fighting with all her might "for the country's colors", track and field queen Nguyen Thi Oanh, from Bac Giang , excellently won 2 gold medals (HCV) to the joy of her fans.

Today (May 9), fans of track and field athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh were surprised to hear that she had to compete in an unprecedentedly rigorous schedule at the 32nd SEA Games due to the schedule change by the organizing committee.

Accordingly, the "golden girl" of Vietnamese athletics must compete in two consecutive events, including the 1,500m at 5:30 p.m. and the 3,000m steeplechase at 5:50 p.m. Thus, the two events she registered to compete in are only 20 minutes apart.

According to the original schedule, Nguyen Thi Oanh competed in the 3,000m steeplechase at 5:50 p.m. on May 9, and the 1,500m on May 11 at 4:50 p.m. These are the two events in which she won gold medals at the 31st SEA Games held in Vietnam in 2022. Before that, on the evening of May 8, she excellently won the gold medal in the 5,000m run, with little time to rest and regain her strength.

This is really a huge obstacle and difficulty for Nguyen Thi Oanh's goal of defending her gold medal because the competition time of the two events is close together, making it easy for athletes to fall into a state of exhaustion.

Anticipating the difficulties and challenges ahead, entering the 1,500m event, the "Bac Giang runner" accelerated and broke away in the very first seconds. She raced on the track, leaving her opponents far behind and excellently finished with a time of 4 minutes 16 seconds 85.

Coming in second was athlete Bui Thi Ngan (Vietnam) with a time of 4 minutes 24 seconds 57, and third was athlete Goh Chui Ling (Singapore) with a time of 4 minutes 26 seconds 33.

Right after winning the gold medal in the 1,500m race, Nguyen Thi Oanh did not have time to be photographed by the press. She only had time to change her clothes and then entered the 3,000m obstacle race.

In this event, Nguyen Thi Oanh competed with 3 athletes who won gold, silver and bronze medals at recent SEA Games. For about 3/4 of the first time, Nguyen Thi Oanh maintained her second place behind the Filipino athlete. From the 9th minute, she suddenly accelerated, creating a large gap with her opponent, excellently finishing first, defending her gold medal in the 3,000m obstacle course, bringing glory to the Fatherland.

With 2 gold medals won this afternoon, Nguyen Thi Oanh has excellently won a total of 3 gold medals at SEA Games 32 out of 4 events she registered to compete. According to the schedule, at 5:00 p.m. on May 12, Nguyen Thi Oanh will enter the 10,000m race. This is also her last competition at SEA Games 32.

Nguyen Thi Oanh (born in 1995), from My Ha commune, Lang Giang district (Bac Giang), is currently both an athlete and an athletics coach at the Bac Giang Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center.

From 2016 to present, she has continuously achieved many successes in domestic and continental tournaments: 1 gold medal, 1 silver medal at the Asian Beach Games (2016), bronze medal at the Asian Games (2018); 8 gold medals at the SEA Games in 2017, 2019, 2022 and 1 gold medal at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championship held in February 2023 in Kazakhstan. Nguyen Thi Oanh also ranked first in the 2022 Vietnam Outstanding Sports Athlete Election.
