Study and earn a living

The journey to become a teacher was full of hardships, but it was a source of great pride and happiness for Ms. Hoa. After graduating from high school, she took the entrance exam to a teacher training college and failed. She struggled to make a living, got married, and had children, but her hope of becoming a teacher never faded. She raised her children while studying for the entrance exam to the teacher training industry. And that hope became a reality, she passed the entrance exam to the Teacher Training College I (Hat Lot, Son La ).

When her child was 4 years old, both mother and child started school. During the holidays, Ms. Hoa worked as a seamstress to earn more money for her child's tuition. She only spent half of the scholarship money she earned through her efforts in studying, and the other half was used to pay for her child's food and to save money for bus fare to occasionally take her child to visit her grandparents.

“In the classroom, I always tried to study hard to get good results. All my efforts paid off! In my second year, I won the third prize for excellent Math teachers, the encouragement prize for excellent Literature teachers, and the encouragement prize for beautiful handwriting teachers in the 'Teaching Profession' competition. I participated in writing a thesis at school and was recognized by the school,” Ms. Hoa recalled those difficult days.

After graduating, she received a decision to work at To Mua Primary and Secondary School (Moc Chau, Son La). This is a mountainous school about 50km away from the district center, a place that everyone previously said was "a wild forest and poisonous water", the dirt road was dusty and slippery, and one had to walk from the main road for nearly ten kilometers to get to the school. On both sides of the road were endless mountains and forests.

Perhaps until now, after working in theeducation sector for more than 24 years, Ms. Hoa still remembers clearly the first time she set foot here with many indescribable emotions. The school yard was deserted, with two rows of old classrooms precariously perched on the hillside. A row of dormitories with tiled roofs, bamboo walls, and slats so far apart that a child could crawl through them.

“I suddenly realized that the previous hardships were nothing compared to the difficulties ahead. There are 9 schools here, scattered far apart. The classrooms are temporary, made of bamboo and thatch. Most of the teachers are local teachers, only a few come from other places,” Ms. Hoa recalled. Having worked at To Mua Primary and Secondary School for 16 years, in 2015, with her efforts and enthusiasm in educating people, Ms. Hoa was appointed Principal and transferred to work at Vu A Dinh Primary School, Van Ho District. The school has 100% Mong ethnic students. The school is located in Long Luong commune, which is extremely complicated in terms of drug abuse and child marriage. The facilities and classrooms are makeshift. The number of students with difficult circumstances, poor households, parents who are drug addicts or are serving sentences is very large, which greatly affects the work of maintaining student numbers.

However, with responsibility, passion for work, and the consensus and solidarity of the teaching staff, the attention and support of the Party Committee, local authorities, and the Parents' Association, Vu A Dinh Primary School has achieved the title of Advanced Labor School for many years. From practical work experience, Ms. Hoa conducted research on innovative experiences in maintaining the number of ethnic minority students and applied them effectively at the unit and was recognized by the District Science Council.

Even if I had to choose again, I would still choose teaching!

After many years of graduating and contributing to education in mountainous areas, Ms. Hoa is working at Long Luong Primary School (Van Ho, Son La). In her career of educating people, having experienced many different positions with many difficulties and hardships, Ms. Hoa always strives to excel with many happy and sad memories.

To encourage students to return to school, she learned about each student’s situation and encouraged teachers to use part of their salary to buy necessities, books, and clothes to support their families and encourage students to return to school. Every time she was able to persuade a student to drop out of school, the teachers would cry tears of joy.

With the spirit of solidarity and dedication of the teaching staff, for many years, Long Luong Primary School has had no more dropouts. The quality of mass education is increasingly improved and maintained; the quality of the spearhead is increasingly concerned. The facilities are spacious and clean; the teaching staff ensures qualifications, capacity, enthusiasm, responsibility, love for the profession, and love for children.

With nearly 25 years of working in mountainous communes with ethnic minorities, especially in difficult circumstances, with difficult family circumstances and low salary, Ms. Hoa always tries to arrange her own work and complete the assigned tasks well. "For me, despite the difficulties and hardships, my passion for work and my love for students seem endless. If I had to choose a career again, I would still choose to be a teacher," Ms. Khuat Thi Hoa emphasized.

With nearly 25 years of work, for 9 consecutive years, Ms. Khuat Thi Hoa was recognized as "Excellent Worker", "Advanced Worker", 13 consecutive years of "Emulation Fighter at the grassroots level"; 1 year recognized as "Provincial Emulation Fighter" and was awarded many certificates of merit and certificates of merit by competent authorities for outstanding achievements in work. Son La Provincial Labor Federation and Vietnam Education Trade Union recognized the title "Good at school work, good at home work" for the period 2010 - 2020. In November 2023, Ms. Hoa was honored by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Youth Union and the Ministry of Education and Training in the program "Sharing with teachers".
