Excellent female student dropped out of 10th grade exam to study continuing education

Dropping out of the 10th grade exam, Thanh Ha entered a continuingeducation center and worked part-time, won an excellent student award and got 6.5 IELTS.

Looking back at the results after three years, Phi Dinh Thanh Ha, 18 years old, a student at the Center for Vocational Education - Continuing Education in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, said he has no regrets for following his mother's guidance.

Ms. Tran Thi Kim Oanh, Ha's mother, said that during middle school, her daughter mainly studied at Nguyen Khuyen Secondary and High School. This is a famous school for training excellent students with strict discipline. Her results were consistently in the middle group of the class, always an excellent student.

"But I saw that my child was stupid, learning and doing everything like a machine, so when she was in 9th grade, I transferred her to another school, which was more gentle," said Ms. Oanh. Before the threshold of 10th grade, instead of following the path of taking the entrance exam to public school and then university, she oriented her child to follow the regular education system. Ms. Oanh said that this way, her child would have less pressure to study for exams, and would have time to learn another profession such as graphic design because she really likes drawing.

"I think three years of high school is just a short period of time in life. It is not necessary to go to public school, but the important thing is to educate children to know what they want and what they need to do," said Ms. Oanh.

Knowing the story, acquaintances said she was "crazy and foolish". Thanh Ha also did not understand why her mother gave her such a contrary direction. "I felt resentful, somewhat disappointed and wondered what I did to deserve to have to study at a continuing education center", Ha recalled.

Entering the new school with a passive and unhappy mindset, Ha reassured herself. As her mother had planned, with a light schedule of 5 days a week, Ha enrolled in a graphic design course at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts. After studying for a few months, she realized that this career was not suitable for her, so she stopped.

The female student then went to work part-time. With a talent for drawing, in 10th grade, she accepted to make diamond paintings, handmade paintings on bags and shirts. After that, she worked as a kitchen assistant for a small French restaurant in Thu Duc City and at the same time managed the fanpage and took care of advertising images for a rice shop.

To make it easier for her studies, when she was in 10th grade, Ha moved to live with her aunt's family in District 1. When she was in 11th grade, she convinced her mother to let her rent a room near school to make it easier to commute to work. During that time, she had to cycle to work, whether the location was near or far.

Ha said that working at the restaurant helped her practice speaking English because the customers were mostly foreigners. She also learned how to manage and take care of everything because there were times when she had to cook, prepare ingredients, and clean up herself.

"There were days when I only slept for two or three hours and then got up to go to school, but I didn't find it difficult because I learned many things that weren't taught in class," Ha said, adding that thanks to her good knowledge base in middle school, she easily passed the learning requirements at the center.

Realizing that she had learned and experienced enough, by grade 12, Ha focused on studying and stopped working part-time. During this year, she participated in the city-level excellent student competition for the continuing education system and won second prize in Geography. She also actively reviewed English, learned more writing skills and obtained an IELTS 6.5 certificate.

Ha said she uses the mind mapping method to easily understand and remember knowledge. In the high school graduation exam at the end of June, Ha chose the social science exam and did quite well.

According to Ha, the environment at the continuing education center still has naughty students, but there are also many who are determined to pursue their studies. Many students have difficult family circumstances so they have to work part-time after school to cover their tuition and living expenses. Being exposed to many different situations, plus the experiences of working part-time, I appreciate what I have even more.

"Studying in any environment is good as long as you have goals and motivation to try. Whether you become better or worse is up to you, circumstances are only a small part," Ha shared.

Ms. Dang Thi Dinh, homeroom teacher of grade 12, commented that Ha is bright, understands lessons quickly, and graduated high school with good grades. She has a clear plan and knows how to allocate time, self-study to complete her goals.

According to her, people still think that continuing education centers are places for weak and bad students, but in recent years, the quality of students at the center has improved. Many students with special circumstances and economic difficulties choose to study here to reduce the burden of tuition fees and have time to work part-time. Many students have good and excellent academic performance and are admitted to major universities.

Ms. Oanh believes that parents need to understand their children to make the right choice. She said that Ha is a mature girl, who has known right from wrong since she was young, and with the moral education foundation from her family, she feels secure in letting her child attend a regular education system.

"I also prepare mentally and accept that my child may make mistakes and stumble to some extent. Letting my child try and make mistakes is also a way to educate them to grow up," said Ms. Oanh.

Ha is waiting for her graduation exam results. She plans to use these scores to apply for admission to the Law major at the University of Law or the University of Economics and Law in Ho Chi Minh City.
