Starting to build the model in 2020, the first favorable factor for Mr. Liem is the year-round water supply from the East Canal. From this water source, he uses it to raise catfish species such as Nha catfish, stewed catfish, yellow catfish, Thai catfish, and red-tailed catfish and specializes in providing breeds to farmers.
From a few small ponds at first, Mr. Liem has now expanded the model to a total area of 7 hectares, following the direction of green farming and growing combined with eco -tourism using closed-loop Aquaponics technology including: Commercial catfish combined with bloodworms as food for fry, ornamental fish and growing water mimosa.
It is expected that when the model is fully operational, it will help reduce the emission factor to "0", contributing to building a model that meets sustainable standards according to the Government 's commitment goals at COP26.
Every year, the model produces 50 spawning batches with about 1 million fry/batch (2 batches/week) focusing on the 6-month rainy season. The parent fish are carefully selected for their quality and egg maturity to be put into the artificial reproduction process.
The fertilized eggs will be hatched in a stainless steel tank with aeration and a gentle water supply; after 4 days of hatching, the eggs will be trained to eat water eggs (naturally raised in the model); after 7 days, bloodworms will be used; after 9 days, bloodworms will be combined with industrial food with a protein content of 40% or more to raise fish fry.
Mr. Liem said: "On average, each year, the Nha catfish and Ham catfish produce about 80 to 100 million fry. Currently, because the Nha catfish price on the market is decreasing, the demand for fry is also decreasing, so I have invested in more yellow catfish and Thai catfish. I have just exported about 4 million fry."
In addition to creating jobs with stable income for local workers, Mr. Liem's closed-loop catfish farming model also welcomes students to practice and gain practical knowledge outside of school.
According to information from the Farmers' Association of Tay Ninh province, this is one of the farms that systematically invests in closed agriculture based on taking advantage of natural conditions, helping to save costs, increase productivity, product quality and economic efficiency, while ensuring green and sustainable production development.
“If you calculate carefully, take good care of yourself, and strictly manage input factors, people will still make a profit, even when prices are low. Applying a closed farming model helps control diseases, avoid chemical abuse, and produce cleaner, higher-quality products. From there, consumers feel more secure when using the products they make,” said Mr. Liem.
Mr. Vo Thanh Liem's circular farming model of catfish farming, when spread, will help change the mindset and habits of traditional agricultural production to ecological, circular production, helping to create more added value for many production households, while protecting the environment sustainably in the future./.
