Cage fish farming on irrigation and hydroelectric lakes

Fish cages of people in Trung Xuan commune (Quan Hoa).

In Trung Xuan commune (Quan Son), the water surface of Trung Xuan hydroelectric lake is becoming a potential aquaculture area. In recent years, many households in Phun, Pieng Pho, Muong villages... have boldly invested in developing cage fish farming. A typical example is the family of Mr. Lo Van Minh in Pieng Pho village - a pioneer in cage fish farming on the lake since 2020. Mr. Minh invested in raising fish species such as grass carp, black carp, monosex tilapia, catfish... for stable economic efficiency. Not only stopping at applying the techniques learned from training courses, Mr. Minh also proactively sought more knowledge through books, newspapers, and the internet to improve fish care and disease prevention techniques. Recently, he started experimenting with raising catfish, a new local fish breed, which has the advantage of being easy to raise, less prone to disease, and can be harvested after only 5-6 months. Mr. Minh hopes that the new fish breed will bring higher efficiency than traditional fish.

In order to support people in developing sustainable cage fish farming, Trung Xuan commune has established a cage fish farming cooperative. Members of the cooperative are fully supported from the stage of selecting breeds, care techniques to connecting to product consumption markets. The commune also acts as a credit guarantee with the Transaction Office of the Social Policy Bank of Quan Son district, creating conditions for people to access preferential capital. Up to now, the whole commune has about 80 households participating in cage fish farming with 90 cages. The annual commercial fish output is about 15 tons, with an estimated revenue of 1.5 billion VND. Cage fish farming not only helps people increase their income but also gradually forms a concentrated farming area in the direction of commodity production.

The cage fish farming model is also developing strongly in Quan Hoa district, especially in the Trung Son hydroelectric reservoir area. Previously, many households here lived on destructive fishing methods, which posed a risk of depleting aquatic resources. However, after being promoted and mobilized by the government, people have gradually switched to cage fish farming, both effectively exploiting the reservoir's water surface and creating a more stable and sustainable livelihood. Currently, in the reservoir area, nearly 50 households are developing cage fish farming, with more than 110 cages, contributing to creating jobs and stable income for dozens of households. Mr. Nguyen Bien Cuong in Ta Ban village, Trung Son commune is one of the pioneers. In 2020, he invested in 2 trial fish cages. Due to lack of experience, he initially placed the cages in an unsuitable location, often affected by storms and floating debris. After receiving technical support, he moved the cages to a more stable area. Thanks to that, the fish grow well and are less susceptible to diseases. From the initial 2 cages, he has now expanded to 9 cages, raising fish such as grass carp, common carp, black catfish, flower catfish... with a yield of 5 - 6 tons of commercial fish, with a revenue of about 180 million VND/year.

Secretary of the Trung Son Commune Party Committee Ngo Sy Tam said: Cage fish farming on Trung Son Hydropower Reservoir has exploited the advantage of water surface, helping people increase their income significantly. In the coming time, the commune will continue to encourage the expansion of the model, while strengthening the management of farming areas, protecting the environment and building local product brands.

In the mountainous district of Ba Thuoc, in recent years, people have invested in developing cage fish farming in the direction of goods, thereby opening up a new direction in local economic development. To contribute to increasing productivity and output, the People's Committee of Ba Thuoc district has organized training courses, supporting farmers in techniques for selecting fish breeds, stocking density, care processes, and regularly cleaning cages to ensure good water circulation, provide enough oxygen for fish and ways to prevent diseases. Up to now, the whole district has nearly 105 households participating in cage fish farming on the Ba Thuoc hydroelectric reservoir with hundreds of cages.

In order to exploit the potential and effectively use the water surface to develop cage fish farming into a large-scale commodity production industry, on December 28, 2022, the Provincial People's Committee issued Decision No. 4716/QD-UBND approving the Project on developing cage fish farming in Thanh Hoa province until 2025, with a vision to 2030. Accordingly, the target by 2025 is that the cage fish farming area will reach 200 hectares, with 3,700 cages, an output of 6,650 tons, creating jobs for over 5,800 workers. By 2030, the fish farming area will reach more than 310 hectares, with 5,340 cages, an output of 13,600 tons, creating jobs for over 9,000 workers.

With over 610 irrigation and hydroelectric reservoirs, this is a large area for people to develop cage fish farming in the direction of commodity production. However, for this model to develop stably and sustainably, it is necessary for functional sectors to participate in planning and organizing reasonable farming areas. Along with propaganda and guidance for people to grasp the technical process, it is necessary to encourage investment in applying scientific advances, building a chain from production to consumption. When cage fish farming is developed synchronously, it will be an effective direction in agricultural development, contributing to hunger eradication, poverty reduction and new rural construction.
