Reuters sources also confirmed Mr Trump's indictment, in which he faces seven counts in a federal case.
The former US president said he had been summoned to appear in federal court in Miami on June 13. In a video posted on Truth Social, Donald Trump said he was innocent, calling it "the greatest witch hunt of all time".
This marks the second time Mr. Trump has been indicted.
He previously faced 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in April related to a hush money payment to a porn star before the 2016 election.
Investigators seized about 13,000 documents from Mr Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, nearly a year ago.
One hundred files were marked as classified, although one of Mr Trump's lawyers previously said all classified files had been returned to the government .
Mr Trump has previously defended his retention of the documents, saying he declassified them while he was president.
However, he provided no evidence of this and his lawyers have denied making that argument in court filings.
