Prime Minister Hun Sen is responsible for guiding the ruling party's policies, which Cambodia's new government must adhere to.
Cambodian People's Party (CPP) spokesman Sok Eysan said on July 30 that after Mr. Hun Sen left the prime minister's seat, he still maintained influence over the country through his role as CPP Chairman.
"He still has influence because he is the chairman of the ruling party. Even though the party makes collective decisions, he still plays a leading role. Hun Sen continues to outline the roadmap and propose the party's political platforms before they are approved by the party collective," Eysan said.
The CPP spokesman affirmed that although the new government under Mr. Hun Manet will be 90% made up of young people, they will still have to carry out the party's policies.
"It is true that Mr. Hun Sen no longer interferes in the work of the new government, but the new government still follows the political platform of the party. Therefore, party leaders have the right to supervise the implementation of the party's policies. The government must be responsible to the party," Mr. Eysan said.

Hun Sen, 70, announced on July 26 that he would no longer be Cambodia’s Prime Minister and would hand over power to his son Hun Manet. Hun Manet’s government will be formed on August 22, with many new faces from the next generation of leaders.
Mr. Hun Sen affirmed that he will not interfere in the future government work of his son Hun Manet. He told his son to protect peace to ensure the development and peace of the Cambodian people.
After stepping down as prime minister, Mr. Hun Sen is expected to be appointed as President of the Royal Council of Cambodia, the nine-member body responsible for selecting the king. He will also be President of the Senate, replacing Mr. Say Chhum.
