Trump chooses oil tycoon as US Secretary of Energy

According to Reuters , US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen oil tycoon Chris Wright and fossil fuel advocate as US Secretary of Energy.

"As Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright will be a key leader in driving innovation, cutting red tape, and ushering in a 'Golden Age of American prosperity and global peace ,'" Trump said.

In a statement on social network X after being nominated, Mr. Wright said he would dedicate himself to improving the lives of Americans with the goal of lowering gas prices.

"Energy is the lifeblood that enables everything in the world to exist. I look forward to getting started," Mr. Wright emphasized.

Mr. Wright is the founder and CEO of Liberty Energy, an oil and gas services company based in Denver, Colorado. Mr. Wright has repeatedly stated his support for Mr. Trump’s plan to maximize oil and gas production and seek to boost electricity generation in the United States.

Chris Wright also supports President-elect Trump’s opposition to global cooperation in the fight against climate change. Wright has even called climate change activists “panic mongers” and criticized the Biden administration’s efforts to address global warming.

“There is no climate crisis, nor are we in an energy transition,” Mr Wright said in a video posted on LinkedIn last year. He added that “the term carbon pollution is an overstatement,” since all life depends on carbon.

That view puts Mr. Wright at odds with billionaire Elon Musk, a strong supporter and informal adviser to Mr. Trump. Mr. Musk is the chief executive of electric car company Tesla and has also invested heavily in solar energy due to concerns about the impact of climate change.

However, Mr. Wright lacks political experience, and the Energy Secretary position is a cabinet position that requires Senate confirmation. He is expected to work on policy with North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, whom Mr. Trump has tapped to lead the newly created National Energy Council.

The U.S. Department of Energy oversees energy production and exports, manages the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, and provides grants and loans to promote energy technology. It also oversees the nuclear weapons program with the Department of Defense and is responsible for nuclear waste disposal.
