Representatives of the US company OpenAI have confirmed their readiness to cooperate with the Italian data protection authority to address concerns related to ChatGPT - a chatbot powered by artificial intelligence (AI).
Italy's privacy watchdog issued a statement on April 6 stating that the Italian government has no intention of hindering the development of AI and technological innovation, and reiterated the importance of complying with the laws protecting the personal data of Italian and European citizens.
Meanwhile, OpenAI affirmed its commitment to increasing transparency in the use of personal data and strengthening existing mechanisms to implement children's rights and protections, and will submit further proposals for consideration by the privacy watchdog.
On March 31, Italy's data protection authority temporarily restricted the ChatGPT chatbot amid allegations that OpenAI may have illegally collected personal data from Italian users. The agency said the chatbot's operations would be suspended until the app meets Italy's privacy standards and regulations. The move has drawn global attention as chatbots come under ever-closer scrutiny.
