NDO - Pakistan's National Institute of Health (NIH) announced on December 30 that there was one more case of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1), the most common form of poliovirus, bringing the total number of cases in the country this year to 68.
The latest case was confirmed in Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwestern Pakistan. The NIH added that this is the 10th polio case from Dera Ismail Khan this year.
Of the total 68 cases, 27 were reported in the southwestern province of Balochistan, 20 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, 19 in the southern province of Sindh, one in the eastern province of Punjab and one in the capital Islamabad, NIH data showed.
Pakistan's polio control program conducts several mass vaccination drives a year, delivering vaccines to children's homes.
NIH has informed the public that completing the routine oral polio vaccination schedule for all children under 5 years of age is essential to enhance immunity against this terrible disease.
A massive vaccination campaign was launched earlier this month in 143 districts to provide vaccination services with the aim of vaccinating more than 44 million children under five years of age.
Phase 2 of the campaign, which begins on December 30, will provide polio vaccines to children in Balochistan province, the NIH added.
