Reuters quoted a senior Pakistani intelligence source as saying that the country appeared to have carried out attacks on Iranian territory, targeting the Baluchi armed group.
Pakistani officials have not officially confirmed the information. Meanwhile, Iranian media said several missiles hit a village in Sistan-Baluchistan province in the border area between the two countries. The incident reportedly killed three women and four children, all of whom were not Iranian.
Earlier, Iran's state news agency IRNA reported that Tehran had carried out airstrikes against the Sunni militant group Jaish al-Ad in Pakistan.
Pakistan said Iran's move was "completely unacceptable and could have serious consequences".
Pakistan's statement did not mention the location of the incident or details of the alleged airspace violation, but said it had sent a protest message to Tehran. Pakistan's foreign ministry also summoned the head of the Iranian delegation in Islamabad.
According to observers, the back-and-forth attacks could strain relations between Iran and Pakistan.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian later said his country's armed forces had targeted the "Iranian terrorist group" Jaish al-Adl in Pakistan.
"No citizen of the friendly and brotherly country of Pakistan should be targeted by Iranian missiles and drones," he added.
