Breaking up a fake pharmaceutical production line, seizing nearly 10 tons of drugs and raw materials

On April 16, Thanh Hoa Provincial Police announced that the Economic Police Department had just dismantled a large-scale nationwide counterfeit drug production and trading ring, arresting 14 subjects for the crime of "Producing and trading in counterfeit disease prevention and treatment drugs".

Previously, through the work of grasping the situation, the Economic Police Department of Thanh Hoa Provincial Police discovered in Thanh Hoa City and some localities, a group of subjects with suspicious signs of producing and trading counterfeit medicines and disease prevention drugs.

After reporting and receiving permission from the Thanh Hoa Provincial Police Department, the Economic Police Department established a special project to fight.

After a period of investigation, the Economic Police Department of Thanh Hoa Provincial Police coordinated with the police of related units and localities to urgently search 6 locations, which are the production places, workplaces, and places where goods are hidden of the subjects in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Vinh Phuc, Hung Yen, An Giang and Dong Thap provinces.

During the search, the police seized 21 types of fake modern medicine and medicine for bone and joint diseases; raw materials for the production of fake medicine including: more than 18,000 boxes of various types, 142kg of pills, tablets, powders and many machines and equipment for production activities... The total weight of fake modern medicine and raw materials for making fake modern medicine is nearly 10 tons.

According to the initial investigation, taking advantage of people's habit of self-prescribing medicines, lack of knowledge when learning about the origin of goods; taking advantage of loopholes in State management of pharmaceutical business activities at drugstores and pharmacies, the group led by Nguyen Tien Dat (born in 1991, residing in Hapulico apartment building, Thanh Xuan district, Hanoi) colluded with the group of Trinh Doan Giao (born in 1985, residing in Binh Tan district, Ho Chi Minh City) to invest in production lines and machinery to produce fake drugs.

Then, the subjects ordered raw materials such as pharmaceuticals, medicinal herbs, and herbs of unknown origin; hired workers to mix them, grind them into powder, use machines to form capsules, blister packs, package the finished fake drugs, and sell them to the market through distribution channels.

Through the initial investigation, the subjects confessed that from 2021 until their arrest, they had sold a large quantity of fake drugs to the market, earning an estimated illegal profit of nearly 200 billion VND.

The investigation is currently continuing.
