Strengthening security solutions for medical staff
The incident occurred at around 10:00 a.m. on October 23. Bang Van Vy (born in 1996, residing in Que Phong commune, Nghe An province) went to the hospital to take care of his wife who had just given birth, and suddenly used a knife to attack medical staff and the patient's family. In particular, Vy grabbed a newborn baby and tried to throw it out the window. A nurse immediately intervened to save the baby and was attacked by the subject.
The incident left four medical staff and two patients’ relatives injured, including nurse Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang, who was seriously injured with stab wounds to the neck and chest. The victims were taken to Nghe An General Hospital for emergency treatment and are now out of danger.

After receiving 1.6 liters of blood, nurse Trang's condition is now basically stable. The current health status of the other victims is also basically no longer life-threatening, Dr. Ha Anh Duc informed.
At the same time, the leaders of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment directed the Nghe An Department of Health, Nghe An General Hospital, and Nghe An Obstetrics Hospital to focus on treating and recovering nurse Trang and the patients as soon as possible. If support from higher levels is needed, the Ministry of Health will promptly provide support.
Also this morning, on behalf of the Minister of Health, Dr. Ha Anh Duc also commended and awarded 4 Certificates of Merit from the Minister to 4 nurses of Nghe An Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital who saved the babies from the attack of the assailant.
The leader of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management said that the Ministry of Health will continue to strengthen security solutions for medical staff in a more systematic way. First of all, at hot spots such as the Emergency Department, the Ministry has directed hospitals to tighten management. At the same time, the hospital security and protection system must also be strengthened, closely coordinated with local police forces.
Hospitals must also proactively invest in monitoring systems, hotlines, and organize drills to handle situations. The goal is to create an absolutely safe environment so that medical staff can fully concentrate on treating patients.
The subject's behavior was extremely reckless.
According to a report from the Nghe An Department of Health, the serious incident occurred at the Neonatal Department of Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital on the morning of October 23.
According to initial information, the mother Lo Thi Khai was admitted to the hospital on October 16 and gave birth to premature twins. The two babies were transferred to the Neonatal Department for monitoring. On the morning of October 23, one of the two babies became seriously ill and was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Department. At the time of explaining the treatment orders, the father of the two babies, Ban Van Vy, was not present.
At around 9:55 a.m., the subject appeared and returned to the patient's room at around 10 a.m. and suddenly attacked with a knife. Initially, the subject tried to attack his wife and child but failed, then turned to assaulting another child patient, his family members and medical staff on duty.
The subject continued to threaten, wrestle, and tried to throw the infant out the window, attacking the patient's family members and four nurses, including a nursing intern. The medical staff at the department promptly intervened, quickly evacuated the children, called security forces, and reported to the hospital leadership.
The incident resulted in two family members and four nurses being injured, one of whom was seriously injured due to multiple trauma and acute blood loss, requiring emergency surgery and intensive resuscitation. The remaining victims were given emergency treatment, surgical treatment and continued to be monitored and treated.
Immediately after the incident, the Department of Health's Board of Directors was present at the hospital to direct emergency operations, stabilize security and order, and encourage medical staff, patients, and victims' families.
Nghe An Department of Health has promptly reported to the leaders of the Ministry of Health, the Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial People's Committee and coordinated with the police to investigate and handle the case according to regulations. Currently, the hospital has strengthened its security plan in the treatment area, while continuing to provide professional care for pediatric patients, medical staff and their families.
