Saul's shocking statement about Real Madrid

Former Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez sparked a major controversy when he compared the level of fanaticism between Flamengo and Real Madrid supporters.

According to Saul, although Real Madrid is one of the most successful teams in the world , the connection between the club and the fans in the stands lacks passion.

"Real Madrid is famous for the titles they've won, so they have a huge global following. But if you go to the stadium, you won't feel anything," Saúl candidly shared.

According to Saul, his club, Flamengo, is the true symbol of football connected to its fans. He said: “Flamengo is better than Madrid. You go to the Maracana, an iconic venue, and it's always packed. When we play away, the stands are also full of Flamengo fans. In one match against Sport Recife, they even had to move to another stadium because the old one wasn't big enough for our fans.”

These recent statements have angered Real Madrid fans, especially coming from a former Atletico player. However, Saul seems unconcerned by the public reaction.

Saul, 31, is currently playing in Brazil under the guidance of his former teammate Filipe Luis, now the head coach of Flamengo. In the 2025 season, Saul made 23 appearances but did not score any goals. Despite this, he still won three titles with Flamengo: the FIFA Challenger Cup, the Copa Libertadores, and the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A.

During his European career, Saul made 427 appearances for Atletico, winning one La Liga title in the 2020/21 season and two Europa League titles in the 2011/12 and 2017/18 seasons.
