This May, the Ministry of Health - Standing Committee of the Central Inter-sectoral Steering Committee on Food Safety will launch a peak period to prevent counterfeit drugs and counterfeit functional foods. Localities need to immediately deploy inspection teams in 63 provinces/cities from now until the end of May with many functional agencies involved.

Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen emphasized this at a direct meeting and online meeting between the Ministry of Health and ministries, branches and localities on the situation of fake drugs, cosmetics and functional foods, which took place on May 7.

According to the Ministry of Health, since the beginning of the year, there have been a series of large-scale counterfeit production and trade cases that have been discovered and prosecuted by the police. Typical cases include counterfeiting milk, medicine, health food, MSG, seasoning powder, cooking oil, etc., which have been going on for a long time, causing public outrage.

Deputy Minister Do Xuan Tuyen said that the Prime Minister has continuously issued three dispatches to strengthen inspection, handling, and strictly punish violators related to the production and consumption of fake milk, functional foods, and drugs.

The Ministry of Health is the standing agency of the National Steering Committee on Food Safety, and at the same time performs the state management function of managing functional foods and therapeutic drugs as assigned.

The Ministry of Health organized a conference to review and evaluate the current situation of production, trade, circulation and use of functional foods and medicines nationwide. The purpose is to propose solutions so that in the coming time, we can continue to implement more fundamental and systematic solutions to tighten the management of each stage, from import, production, circulation to consumption.

Concluding the conference, Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen requested to tighten the management of product registration and self-declaration, especially the mechanism for revoking licenses for businesses that do not correct violations. The correction needs to be clearly checked and evaluated. In particular, it is necessary to conduct surprise inspections to promptly detect and handle violations, and conduct large-scale inspections once a quarter./.
