On June 5, the Dien Bien Province Center for Disease Control reported that a 2-year-old child had been infected with anthrax. This is the 14th case of anthrax recorded in the province.
Previously, Thao Thi D. (born in 2021, residing in Pu Xi, Tuan Giao district, Dien Bien) had symptoms of fever, vomiting, and a purple-black and itchy rash on her left arm. Later, the purple-black rash grew larger and had pus. Her family took her to get medicine but it did not help. On June 4, D. was transferred to Dien Bien Provincial General Hospital for treatment and was diagnosed with pneumonia and anthrax.

Patient D. is a rare case because he is too young and has not been exposed to anthrax. According to his family, they previously ate pork and vegetables, not beef. There is no anthrax outbreak in the area.
It is known that from May 5 to 30, in Tua Chua district, Dien Bien, 3 anthrax outbreaks with 13 cases were recorded. Specifically, Muong Bang commune: 1 anthrax outbreak, Xa Nhe commune had 2 anthrax outbreaks, currently no deaths have been recorded.
According to the Department of Preventive Medicine, Ministry of Health , anthrax, also known as anthrax, is a dangerous acute infectious disease of warm-blooded animals (livestock, wild animals), which can be transmitted from animals to humans through contact, slaughter, and eating livestock, especially sick or dead buffalo, cows, and horses, or contact with the environment or soil containing anthrax bacteria.
