1. The world's smallest ungulate. The adult Indonesian chevrotain is only about 45 cm long and weighs less than 2 kg, making it the smallest representative of the ungulate group. Photo: Pinterest. 2. Not a true deer. Despite its deer-like appearance, this species belongs to the Tragulidae family – an ancient branch separate from modern deer and does not have antlers. Photo: Pinterest.
3. Live alone and are extremely secretive. They often operate alone in dense forest bushes, are shy and very difficult to observe in the wild. Photo: Pinterest. 4. Have long fangs. Although they eat plants, males have long fangs that protrude from their mouths to compete for territory and attract mates. Photo: Pinterest.
5. Small legs but very fast. Thanks to its slim and agile legs, the chevrotain can dash through forest trails at surprising speeds to avoid predators. Photo: Pinterest. 6. They have the habit of “marking territory” with feces. They often choose fixed spots to defecate, both as a way to protect their territory and to support scent communication between individuals. 8. Threatened by deforestation. Although not classified as critically endangered, the Indonesian chevrotain is greatly affected by deforestation and hunting in Southeast Asia. Photo: Pinterest.
