With the sole motto "Serving readers, there is no best, it must always be better", SGGP Newspaper staff always strive to meet the expectations and trust of readers.
As a newspaper associated with the moment of national reunification, Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper (SGGP) has left a deep impression on readers with sharp articles that truly reflect the breath of life. However, in the digital age and the strong development of media platforms, innovation and development are vital factors for SGGP Newspaper to continue to affirm its position. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the first issue of SGGP Newspaper (May 5, 1975 - May 5, 2025), we would like to propose some solutions to help SGGP Newspaper develop sustainably, meeting the needs of the public in the new context.
Over the past half century, SGGP Newspaper has affirmed its role as one of the leading newspapers in Vietnam, currently the only major political newspaper in Ho Chi Minh City, with rich content, from politics, economics, culture to social life. The newspaper is not only a reliable source of information but also a bridge between the Party, the State, the Party Committee, the government and the people of the city.
However, the current media landscape poses many challenges for SGGP Newspaper, namely: the development of social networks, online news platforms and electronic newspapers has changed the information reception habits of the public, especially young people, causing traditional print newspapers to gradually lose market share; the emergence of new media platforms, from electronic newspapers to YouTube and TikTok channels, are attracting a large audience thanks to concise, attractive content and diverse formats; the need for multi-dimensional information, as the modern public requires information that is not only accurate but also fast, vivid and highly interactive; the limited resources of the Newspaper, as investment in technology, human resources and high-quality content requires large financial resources, while revenue from print newspapers is declining.
To overcome these challenges, SGGP Newspaper needs to innovate comprehensively, from content, form to public approach, while taking advantage of existing brand and reputation to develop in the new context, such as continuing to promote digital transformation and develop online platforms; continuing to innovate content to meet modern public needs; enhancing interaction and building a press public community, investing in human resources and international cooperation; diversifying revenue sources, building a sustainable business model and taking advantage of the 50th anniversary to promote the brand.
The 50th anniversary of the first issue is an opportunity for SGGP Newspaper to affirm its position and attract public attention. Recently, the Newspaper introduced a special data journalism project: " Ho Chi Minh City 50 years: Proud imprints through the pages of SGGP Newspaper", exploiting a valuable archive of documents from more than 17,000 printed issues over the past half century, with the goal of systematizing information, depicting the development journey of Ho Chi Minh City through each stage. In addition, the Newspaper can organize a series of events such as an exhibition on the 50-year journey, displaying typical issues, historical images and stories of SGGP Newspaper... (associated with the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day); or organize competitions (such as the Writing Contest "SGGP - 50 years of a journey", inviting readers to share their feelings about the newspaper or stories about Ho Chi Minh City, starting from this year until the 51st anniversary of the Newspaper's establishment next year)...
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of its first issue, SGGP Newspaper is facing great opportunities and challenges in the context of modern media. The 50-year journey is not only a source of pride but also a driving force for SGGP Newspaper to innovate, create, continue to accompany readers and contribute to building a civilized, modern, and humane Ho Chi Minh City, so that the newspaper is always worthy of being the voice of the Party Committee, government and people of the city.
104-year-old reader still passionately reads SGGP Newspaper
At the age of 104, Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan is a traditional, long-time reader of SGGP Newspaper. She lives with her son's family at 671/10 Nguyen Kiem Street, Ward 9, Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City. Receiving us, she said that despite her advanced age and difficulty in moving around, her mind is still sharp and her eyes are still bright. No one knows since when, SGGP Newspaper has become an indispensable "spiritual food" for her every day.
Mr. Luu Phuoc Thanh, the youngest son of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Xuan, said that for many years now, it has become a habit for his mother to read the SGGP newspaper around 8-9am. She hardly misses any issue, any page, even the advertisement section. She likes the articles about the Party's policies and the State's policies and good people and good deeds the most. Whenever she comes across a good article, she calls her children and grandchildren to discuss it, telling them to read it together to learn.

Over the past 50 years, SGGP Newspaper has been a pioneer in propagating the Party and State's guidelines and policies and has many articles expressing the thoughts and aspirations of the people. It is the closeness of the Party Newspaper - SGGP to the people, the practical penetration and dedication of the reporters that has led to many articles with a strong people's spirit, highly suggestive and revealing. News and articles carrying the "heat" of people's lives have contributed to building a solid position of SGGP Newspaper in the hearts of readers over the past 50 years.
When the country enters the stage of development, many problems will arise in reality that need to be solved. Reality requires the press to get involved, to accompany the government and the people, in which the Party Newspaper - SGGP takes the lead. SGGP Newspaper needs to continue to have many articles with a strong people's life, with high discovery, creating an impression and trust with readers as it has done in the past decades. The reality of people's lives is fertile ground for the press to develop, each article with the breath of life in Party Newspaper - SGGP is a solid bridge connecting SGGP Newspaper with readers.
Mr. DANH QUOC CUONG, Can Tho City: Innovation - a bright spot of SGGP Newspaper
I am deeply impressed with SGGP Newspaper for its ability to adapt to the times while still maintaining its role as a bridge between the Party, the Government and the people. The newspaper always conveys information quickly and accurately, helping readers understand the changes in all aspects of contemporary life. This clearly demonstrates the sense of responsibility of the revolutionary press in the cause of protecting the independence, freedom and unity of the country.
At the time of the collapse of the Can Tho bridge approach span on the morning of September 26, 2007 - a tragic event for the people of the West, at that time SGGP Newspaper had the 12 Hour newspaper (published in the early afternoon every day) which promptly brought information to readers. At that time, online newspapers were not very popular, readers still relied on printed newspapers to get information. Through SGGP 12 Hour newspaper, I got the initial information about the incident. The good thing about SGGP Newspaper at that time was that it promptly launched a voluntary blood donation movement, a charity movement to raise money to help workers and their families who had accidents....
In the “storm” of strong multimedia development, SGGP Newspaper always wins the hearts of readers thanks to its quality, honest and reputable news and articles. Many readers agree that, despite its strong development on the electronic platform, the newspaper still maintains the criteria of honesty, objectivity and true reflection of social life, ensuring trust. These characteristics clearly demonstrate the pioneering and creative spirit of SGGP Newspaper.
