Hai Duong is a low-lying commune of Hai Lang district, Quang Tri province, specializing in rice cultivation but is blessed by nature with flat, white sand land. Exploiting the potential advantages of the sandy area, under the direction of the People's Committee of the commune, people in 3 villages: Dien Khanh, Dong Duong, Xuan Vien have put nem trees into production after the 2 rice crops have ended. From small-scale cultivation, up to now, nem trees have been grown in a concentrated area of up to 62 hectares, becoming the main crop in production development in the area.

Previously, people in Hai Duong commune had recognized the suitability of nem trees for the soil and climate in the area, but they were mainly planted in home gardens with small areas. In order to develop the model in the direction of goods, bringing high economic efficiency, the local government organized for farmers to participate in training courses on how to plant and care for nem trees according to the correct process and techniques to improve the quality of crops and economic efficiency for farmers.

Mr. Phan Van Long, Dien Khanh village, Hai Duong commune, who has been attached to the nem tree for many years, shared: The process of growing nem tree is not difficult, you have to make the soil loose, high beds, then spread decomposed manure and NPK fertilizer, then cover with a thin layer of soil to prevent the seed tubers from coming into direct contact with the fertilizer, sow the tubers evenly, continue to cover with rice husks and then cover with straw. After the nem seeds have grown 2-3 leaves, water with nitrogen and NPK fertilizer. After that, just weed and wait for harvest.

Mr. Phan Huy Can, in Dong Duong village, Hai Duong commune added: “According to experience, to grow nem trees effectively, from the beginning, the soil must be carefully prepared, and the seeds must be selected to be firm, healthy and disease-free for sowing. Our family sowed from the 8th lunar month, and at this time, we can harvest and thin out the nem fields to facilitate the development of the tubers.”

With the concern of how to increase the economic value of the local nem tree in the market, in October 2024, Thuan Viet Agricultural Products Trading and Processing Cooperative was established with 33 members and a charter capital of 500 million VND. The Cooperative has invested in machinery such as: cold dryers, vacuum sealers, cutting machines, automatic fryers to apply modern technology to the production, preservation and processing of nem trees. With the method of chopping, cold drying of nem leaves and tubers, vacuum packaging weighing from 300 grams - 1 kg for easy access to consumers. This not only helps reduce the time to prepare nem leaves and tubers before cooking but also promotes the product to reach a further and wider market.

Processing leaves and tubers into dried tubers will extend the shelf life, make it easier to package and transport, increase market access, and increase product prices, thereby increasing income for tubers. Director of Thuan Viet Agricultural Products Processing and Trading Cooperative Nguyen Thi Huyen said: “The cooperative develops a 12-hectare raw material area and purchases tubers from farmers at a stable price higher than that of traders to continue expanding the consumption market.

Recently, the Cooperative's fresh leaf and root products and processed products from the tree have been consumed not only in the province but also displayed, introduced, promoted and consumed quite a lot in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Da Nang... and on social networking sites.

According to Vice Chairman of Hai Duong Commune People's Committee, Vo Trung Hieu, in the conversion of suitable crop structure in the locality, nem tree has affirmed its economic efficiency. On average, each sao gives an income of about 12-15 million VND/crop, many times higher than rice cultivation. With this model, farmers here have a fairly stable source of income, with an average income per capita of 71.67 million VND/year. In the sandy area, the State has invested in electricity, transportation, irrigation systems, and Thuan Viet Agricultural Products Trading and Processing Cooperative buys nem products, ensuring that households can feel secure in production.

In the coming time, with the goal of making nem tree the main vegetable crop in local agricultural development, Hai Duong commune is continuing to mobilize people to expand the area of low-efficiency vegetable land to grow nem tree, bringing high economic efficiency.
