Recently, the Phu Yen Fish Sauce Village project in Dong Hoa Town, designed by architect Nguyen Thanh Bao Vuong, surpassed dozens of competing projects and won the Green Architecture category of the Top 10 Awards 2024. This is an annual award to find typical trends in the Architecture, Interior Design and Green Building industry in Vietnam, co-organized by the Vietnam Association of Architects, the Vietnam Green Building Council, the Vietnam Furniture Association and the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam.
Phu Yen Fish Sauce Village makes full use of available elements to revive the abandoned craft village space, turning old houses into sustainable resorts. The project retains 100% of the existing greenery, reuses traditional materials, both minimizing environmental impact and honoring local identity.
The building has large windows, which not only help increase air circulation and take advantage of natural light, but also expand the view, creating a better connection between the interior space and the natural landscape outside. The building meets many criteria for passive design and sustainable resource use, contributing to the trend of green building development in Vietnam.
Architect Nguyen Thanh Bao Vuong said: We have devoted a lot of effort to designing and constructing the Phu Yen Fish Sauce Village project. In addition to the existing infrastructure of the house, all the interior, windows, doors, walls and roofs are built with locally available materials; helping the project optimize the solution of using environmentally friendly materials. In addition, when put into operation in the form of a resort business, the project has also created jobs for local workers.
Not only honoring green buildings, green architectural designs are also focused on. In recent years, the Student Green Architecture Award has also attracted a large number of students from architecture and construction schools to participate. In Phu Yen, the Central University of Construction is one of the continuingeducation institutions with students winning awards. Typically, at the 2024 Student Green Architecture Competition, student Vo Ngoc Trai with the theme of Phu Lac Fishing Village Cultural Center, Dong Hoa Town won an encouragement prize.
Inevitable trend
Developing green construction is a global trend and Vietnam is actively promoting it to meet the needs of environmental protection and efficient use of resources. Accordingly, Resolution 06-NQ/TW on planning, construction, management and sustainable development of Vietnamese urban areas to 2030, with a vision to 2045, has provided guidelines for planning, construction, and management of sustainable urban development in a green, civilized and unique direction. In addition, since 2011, the Vietnam Association of Architects has also published the Green Architecture Declaration and 5 green architecture criteria. This is a milestone in shaping the green architecture movement in Vietnam.
The Provincial Association of Architects regularly connects teams of experts to improve the design capacity and implementation of green architectural works, contributing to the development of the province's urban areas to become more and more sustainable. At the same time, it organizes to honor teams of architects with exemplary green building designs.
Architect Phan Thanh Liem , Chairman of Phu Yen Architects Association
Mr. Tran Xuan Tuc, Director of the Department of Construction, said: Green transformation in construction works needs to be implemented from planning, architecture, construction complex, to individual construction works. That is, using energy efficiently while minimizing the use of non-renewable energy; reducing carbon emissions by using environmentally friendly materials and clean construction technology.
In Phu Yen, the province encourages units to prioritize investment in the production of green construction materials and technological innovation to minimize environmental pollution based on adequate production space and stable raw material areas. Operating facilities must promote research and use of waste (thermal ash, slag, acid rock, etc.) as raw materials and fuel to replace traditional raw materials.
Meanwhile, according to Architect Phan Thanh Liem, Chairman of Phu Yen Architects Association, green architectural works not only contribute to saving energy and effectively using natural resources, but also create a healthy living space, close to people and the environment. "During the operation process, we encourage architects and project owners to prioritize the application of green architectural solutions such as using environmentally friendly materials, taking advantage of ventilation, natural light, green roof systems... in the project", said Architect Phan Thanh Liem.
