Imprisonment for using social networks to propagate against the State

On June 6, the People's Court of Dak Lak province opened the first instance trial of the criminal case against defendant Dang Dang Phuoc (born in 1963), residing in residential group 7A, Tan Loi ward, Buon Ma Thuot city, former music teacher at Dak Lak Pedagogical College for the crime of "Making, storing, disseminating or propagating information, documents, and items against the Socialist Republic of Vietnam" under Article 117 of the 2015 Penal Code.

According to the indictment, since 2012, Dang Dang Phuoc began using the Internet to participate in opposition activities launched by a number of individuals inside and outside the country.

Specifically, Phuoc posted and shared more than 200 articles with content attacking high-ranking leaders and the government, distorting the political and social situation in the country; publicly defaming and slandering the police force; taking advantage of issues of concern to society and the online community to distort the political, economic and social situation of the country; regularly participating in associations, groups and forums on social networks to support the activities of opposition groups such as "No U", "Propaganda of the Constitution"...

In addition, Dang Dang Phuoc also regularly sought to attract disgruntled and opposing subjects in the province to participate in trials of a number of law-breaking subjects, then hung banners, obstructed the activities of functional agencies, incited and complicated security and order; gathered to sing songs with provocative and destructive content, distorted the policies of the Party and State, and defamed the people's government.

Phuoc's actions violated the regulations of theeducation sector, were contrary to teachers' ethics, and violated the law.

These acts have been going on for a long time. Although authorities have invited him to work many times to propagate, mobilize, explain and remind him, Phuoc has not complied.

Being praised by some reactionary organizations and individuals outside, showing tricks to get around, Phuoc became more and more arrogant, challenging the authorities.

At the end of the trial, the Trial Panel sentenced defendant Dang Dang Phuoc to 8 years in prison for the crime of "Making, storing, disseminating or propagating information, documents, and items aimed at opposing the Socialist Republic of Vietnam" under Article 117 of the 2015 Penal Code.
