Philippines provides images showing its navy ship encountering Chinese Coast Guard vessel in South China Sea in March
Reuters quoted Mr. Marshall Louis Alferez, Assistant Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines for Maritime and Ocean Affairs, as saying that the country has registered to expand its continental shelf in the East Sea.
The proposal was approved and endorsed by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. after the Manila government completed a technical and scientific study in the area, according to the country's Department of Foreign Affairs .
In 2016, from the Philippines' lawsuit, the International Court of Arbitration in The Hague (PCA) issued a ruling rejecting China's "cow tongue line" map in the East Sea.
In another development, Naval News reported on June 12 that the Manila government is looking to build a new military base in Subic Bay to enhance its aerial surveillance capabilities and power projection in the East Sea.
According to the Philippine Air Force's tender documents and development plan, a new forward base will be built at Subic Bay International Airport to support reconnaissance and strike aircraft.
The project marks the Philippines' return and strong reinvestment in Subic Bay, which was once a US naval base.
