“The Ancestors’ House” is a light horror film, incorporating many cultural elements and meaningful messages. The film earned 225 billion VND.
The film that is attracting audiences in theaters is “Quy nhap trang” with a revenue of more than 139 billion VND after more than 2 weeks of showing. A month earlier, “Den am hon” achieved a revenue of 105 billion VND after only 11 days of showing. “Nha gia tien” achieved 225 billion VND after 3 weeks of showing. Statistics show that more than 50% of the Vietnamese film market share in 2025 belongs to the horror genre, with about 20 projects to be released this year.
In previous years, Vietnamese horror films were quite obscure, with only a few works making an impression such as “Muoi”, “Qua tim mau”, “Scandal 2”, “Nguoi bat tu”, “That son tam linh”… However, in the past 2 years, the quality of Vietnamese horror films has gradually improved. The setting, special effects, and makeup have been carefully invested in, highlighting the content of the film. Many films have wide shots and beautiful camera angles, good lighting and composition. The actors perform well, and the costumes and makeup are suitable for the characters and settings. The messages embedded and conveyed in the film are also clearer and more profound. The spiritual elements are conveyed reasonably.
In particular, what makes Vietnamese films attractive is the audience’s curiosity and interest in anecdotes, legends or mysterious phenomena that have been passed down in folklore, which filmmakers have exploited and turned into attractive films. In addition, famous literary works such as “The Story of Nam Xuong’s Daughter”, “Tet in Hell Village”, “Tam Cam”… have also been brought to the big screen with a new and creative perspective… bringing viewers more attractive cinematic experiences.
A notable highlight is the element of folk culture and traditional culture that is portrayed quite vividly. For example, the custom of worshipping grandparents and ancestors; regional customs and practices or long-standing craft villages such as glass paintings, porcelain mosaics, etc. in the films “House of Ancestors”, “Den huong”…
It must be admitted that despite many positive changes, Vietnamese horror films still have some limitations, especially in the script. Many films have good ideas but the implementation is not attractive enough or lengthy.
The explosion of Vietnamese horror films in 2025 is an opportunity for audiences to experience more of this genre of films with an attractive market share but in previous years was dominated by foreign films. However, this is also a challenge for directors and producers to create quality films, not only successful in terms of revenue, but also to maintain the appeal of this genre and continue to exploit it for a long time.
