The 2024 Cannes Film Festival has officially kicked off in the coastal city of Cannes, southern France. Activities at this year's film event will last from May 14 to May 25.
This year's festival opened with the premiere of Le Deuxième Acte (The Second Act) by director Quentin Dupieux. 22 films will compete for the Palme d'Or - Best Film.
Among the works competing for the Palme d'Or, Anora by American director Sean Baker has caught the attention of critics. The film revolves around the life of a prostitute from Brooklyn (USA) who marries the son of a Russian tycoon. The modern fairy tale encounters a major obstacle when the male lead's parents fly to the US to force the marriage to be annulled.
Caught by the Tides by Chinese director Jia Zhangke also received expectations from experts. The film focuses on the journey of a woman (played by Zhao Tao) searching for her lover after he leaves without any explanation.
The Apprentice, directed by Ali Abbasi, is also expected to win. The Apprentice depicts the career of billionaire Donald Trump as a real estate businessman in New York during the 1970s and 1980s. Director Ali Abbasi won the Un Certain Regard award at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for his fantasy film Border.
Emilia Perez, directed by French director Jacques Audiard and set in Mexico, about a crime boss who undergoes gender reassignment surgery to evade the authorities, is also expected to win at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Director Jacques Audiard won the Palme d'Or for Dheepan in 2015.
Megalopolis by American director Francis Ford Coppola is considered a strong candidate for Best Picture. The epic film, which cost $120 million, revolves around the life of an architect (played by Adam Driver) with a master plan to rebuild New York City. Director Francis Ford Coppola has won the Palme d'Or twice with The Conversation and Apocalypse Now.
The Un Certain Regard (Unique Perspective) section features 18 films. This is the second most important section after the Palme d'Or, honoring films with unique and diverse styles, with non-traditional approaches.
The 2024 Cannes Film Festival promises to be a fierce race between leading European and Asian filmmakers as well as filmmakers from other countries and territories around the world and Hollywood.
Among them, the Chinese film industry sent to this year's Cannes Film Festival works such as Caught by the Tides, Black Dog, Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, She's Got No Name.
Although the project is not competing for awards, Xiang Yuan Long still receives great public attention because of the participation of A-list Chinese actors such as Zhang Ziyi, Zhao Liying, Yang Mi, Li Xian, Yi Yang Qianxi...
Xiang Yuan Long is based on one of China's most famous unsolved murder cases. The case took place in a bustling alleyway during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai in the 1940s.
The film revolves around the wife Chu Chiem Thi (played by Zhang Ziyi) who is accused of dismembering her husband in a bloody manner - a murder that seems impossible for her to commit alone. The murder thrusts Chu Chiem Thi into the center of public attention.
