Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Van Su received and worked with the Director of the World Bank

On October 30, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Van Su and representatives of departments and branches had a working session with the World Bank delegation led by Ms. Mariam J. Sherman, World Bank Director for Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, East Asia and Pacific region on contents related to the Mekong Delta Climate Resilience and Integrated Transformation Project (MERIT/WB11).

Working session scene

To enhance resilience to climate change and improve livelihoods for people in the Mekong Delta, the World Bank (WB) finances the MERIT/WB11 Project, with a total capital of about VND 17,700 billion (equivalent to USD 741 million); the managing agency is the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ; the project owner is the Central Management Board of Irrigation Projects.

Delegates of Ca Mau province attended the working session

After the province merger, when combining the 2 MERIT/WB11 projects of Ca Mau province (old) with MERIT/WB11 of Bac Lieu province (old) into MERIT/WB11 project of Ca Mau province (new), the foreign loan capital is about 69 million USD; of which, the Central Government allocates 90%, the locality borrows 10%.

Ms. Mariam J. Sherman, World Bank Director for Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, East Asia and Pacific region attended the meeting.

At the meeting, Ms. Mariam J. Sherman, World Bank Director for Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, East Asia and Pacific Region, thanked the provincial leaders for their warm welcome to the delegation; at the same time, highly appreciated the strengths and potential of Ca Mau province.

Ms. Mariam J. Sherman pledged to maintain and strengthen the cooperative relationship with the provinces of the Mekong Delta in climate change resilience, sustainable economic development and agricultural transformation; at the same time, will focus resources to support and accompany Vietnam in general, and Ca Mau province in particular in the field of climate change response and related fields.

Ms. Mariam J. Sherman said: The World Bank has discussed with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to try to speed up the completion of project approval by April 2026. Therefore, it is hoped that Ca Mau province will promote the procedures to ensure the project is implemented according to the expected time.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Van Su thanked the delegation for their attention and cooperation with Ca Mau province; and affirmed that previous projects funded by the World Bank have made positive contributions to Ca Mau province's climate change response goals through activities such as infrastructure investment, production capacity improvement and resource management. The MERIT/WB11 project will continue the success and practical experience of previous projects.

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Van Su presented a souvenir to a representative of the World Bank, marking the strong bond between the parties in the cooperation process.

Regarding the discussion on the MERIT/WB11 Project, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Van Su proposed that the partners expand the number of participants in training and project implementation guidance, in order to share and create consensus in the parties' awareness of the methods as well as the legal framework.

In addition, we would like to combine the MERIT/WB11 project of the two provinces of Ca Mau (old) and Bac Lieu (old) into one common project. On the other hand, we will jointly plan the progress after the training to have specific steps for the upcoming work for each side, in order to speed up the progress as well as the quality of the project.

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Van Su believes that with the determination and efforts of the province and the support of the World Bank, the MERIT/WB11 Project will soon be implemented and make significant contributions to the fight against climate change, realizing the green and sustainable development goals of Ca Mau province.
