UN Deputy Secretary-General appreciates Vietnam's contributions at international legal forums

On March 26, Ambassador, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN) Dang Hoang Giang had a working session with Deputy Secretary-General, Head of the UN Legal Office Elinor Hammarskjöld on the occasion of her taking over this position.

At the meeting, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang shared about Vietnam's participation in UN legal bodies in recent times as well as in many negotiation processes to build legal frameworks of primary importance. Specifically, such as: International Law Commission (ILC), International Trade Law Commission (UNCITRAL), Legal and Technical Commission (LTC) of the Seabed Authority, the Agreement on Biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) within the framework of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the UN Convention against Cybercrime.

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang highly appreciated the UN Legal Office for its close cooperation and support for Vietnam over the years, notably technical assistance activities and training programs to improve the capacity of legal staff in many Vietnamese agencies and ministries.

Affirming Vietnam's consistent stance of always upholding international law, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang said that Vietnam strongly supports and commits to continue to closely coordinate with the UN Legal Office and other member countries in ensuring the effective operation of legal mechanisms. At the same time, it will promote discussions on codification and progressive development of international law within the UN framework.

Ms. Elinor Hammarskjöld, Under-Secretary-General and Head of the UN Legal Office, highly appreciated the role and positive and substantial contributions of Vietnam at many UN legal forums in recent times. She hoped that Vietnam would continue to contribute more and join hands with the Legal Office and UN agencies in the reform process as well as improve the operational efficiency of the UN system. Continue to promote compliance with the Charter and fundamental principles of international law, contributing to strengthening the rule of law for peace, stability and sustainable development in all regions of the world.
