Women make dreams come true
With special attention from the Party and State, the increasing participation of ethnic minority women in leadership positions not only contributes to ensuring representation and social equity but also promotes the role and voice of the ethnic minority community in policy making for the country's comprehensive and sustainable development.
Xo Vi, a Brau ethnic from Kon Tum, is the youngest female representative in theEducation sector in the 15th National Assembly. At the age of 15, when her peers were married and had children, Vi wanted to go to school. When her father wanted her to quit school to get married, she told him: "I really want to go to school. If you make me quit, I won't stay at home." After a period of studying hard, Vi was the first and only Brau person from the boarding school to be admitted to university. After graduating from university, she worked at the Kon Tum Provincial Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities. In June 2021, Vi was elected to the 15th National Assembly. She shared: "I hope I can become an inspiration for young ethnic minorities to strive to study well. Because only a good path of studying can change their lives and build their homeland."
According to Ms. Lo Thi Luyen, Provincial Party Committee member, Deputy Head of the National Assembly Delegation of Dien Bien province, XVth tenure: “The Thai ethnic group believes that women do not need to study much, they just need to give birth and take care of the family. But since I was a child, I have had a dream of working in a state agency. I overcame barriers with my efforts in studying and my courage in life. In response to my future mother-in-law's wish for a daughter-in-law who only stays at home to serve the family, I discussed frankly with her, I will continue my dream of studying, if she does not let us be together, I will accept. Then my mother-in-law agreed. I think overcoming barriers requires the support of the government and mass organizations. But the woman herself is important, first of all, women must build their own dreams and find ways to make their dreams come true”.
Ethnic women actively participate in building the Party and political system.
One of the targets of the Project "Achieving gender equality and solving urgent issues for women and children" (Project 8) under the National Target Program for Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas is to improve the capacity of ethnic minority female cadres participating in leadership in the political system (Target 6). According to the report of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union (VWU) on the implementation results of Project 8, Phase I: 2021 - 2025, regarding Target 6, capacity building activities have been implemented for 4,164/2,000 ethnic minority female cadres participating in leadership in the political system (exceeding the target, reaching 208%).
In Dak Lak today, the story of ethnic women actively participating in Party building and the political system is no longer strange. According to information from the Vietnam Women's Union, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu - Permanent Vice President of the Dak Lak Provincial Women's Union said that in order to effectively participate in Party building and the political system building, over the past 10 years, the Provincial Women's Union has directed all levels of the union to preside over and coordinate the organization of nearly 1,700 monitoring sessions, participate in giving comments and social criticism on over 1,500 draft documents related to women, children, family and gender equality.
In particular, to effectively participate in Party building and the political system of the Women's Union, all levels of the Union always focus on building the Party in terms of politics, ideology and ethics, assigning cadres to grasp the grassroots, especially in areas with prominent issues; organize hundreds of dialogues to support women in exercising their right to direct democracy; perform well the work of receiving citizens, handling petitions, and coordinating to protect the legitimate rights and interests of women and children. The work of social supervision and criticism of the Women's Union at all levels has been invested in both breadth and depth, clearly demonstrating the role and responsibility in supervising the implementation of the Party's guidelines, policies and laws of the State related to women, children and gender equality.
It can be said that in Phase I: 2021 - 2025, Project 8 has achieved many results. Many positive changes, initial changes in the "thinking and working style" of people in particularly difficult communes and villages are great successes from the Project's interventions, contributing to effectively solving a number of urgent social issues facing women and children and promoting gender equality in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.
In phase II: 2026 - 2030, the Vietnam Women's Union will continue to promote the leadership role and substantive participation of women in ethnic minority and mountainous areas in socio-economic development activities; improve gender mainstreaming capacity for officials in the political system, through activities such as: improving capacity for female ethnic minority officials in the political system, focusing on improving capacity to participate in digital transformation and paying attention to capacity training to meet the criteria for planning, appointment and participating in candidacy and election campaigning for elected bodies at all levels; improving capacity for gender mainstreaming in policy making and implementation for officials in the political system and village elders, village chiefs, religious dignitaries, and prestigious people in the community;...
