Women join hands to build traffic culture

Building a traffic culture is considered a sustainable solution to prevent irreparable losses caused by traffic accidents. And women are increasingly playing an important role in forming civilized and safe traffic awareness from small actions, spreading from each home to the community.

More than just numbers

Traffic accidents are not just cold numbers in annual statistics. Every day, traffic accidents claim the lives of dozens of people and injure many others across the country. Behind each accident lies an immense pain.

In 2024, there were more than 21,500 road traffic accidents nationwide, killing nearly 10,000 people. Of these, 253 occurred in Phu Yen , killing 145 people and injuring 167. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, there were 54 traffic accidents in the province, killing 36 people and injuring 417 people (a decrease of 22 accidents, 6 deaths, and 12 injuries compared to the same period).

Among the causes of accidents, lack of awareness when participating in traffic, especially speeding, not staying in the right lane, and driving after drinking alcohol still account for a high percentage. More worryingly, up to 72% of accidents involve motorbikes and scooters; 70% of victims are men of working age in each family and the whole society.

Spread from small actions

In reality, women play a particularly important role in promoting andeducating traffic law compliance awareness for family members. With their closeness, dedication and responsibility, they are not only the ones reminding their husbands, children and relatives to comply with traffic regulations such as: wearing helmets properly, driving on the right side of the road, not using phones while driving, not drinking alcohol while driving... The gentle daily reminders of mothers and wives are the foundation for forming civilized and safe traffic awareness in each family. In addition, women are also the bridge between the family and the community, actively participating in traffic safety propaganda movements and models, contributing to spreading a responsible lifestyle, building safe families and a peaceful society.

We hope that every woman will not only comply with the Law on Road Traffic Safety and Order, but also remind and encourage her husband, children and relatives to participate in safe traffic. That is the best way for women to protect their families.

Ms. Pham Thi Thu Huyen, Head of Propaganda Department of Provincial Women's Union

Recognizing the key role of women in forming traffic awareness right from the family, recently, the Provincial Women's Union continued to coordinate with the Department of Justice to organize 5 communication sessions to educate and propagate traffic safety actions for 500 women in 5 communes and wards in Tuy An, Phu Hoa, Dong Xuan districts, Dong Hoa town and Tuy Hoa city. At the communication sessions, union officials and judicial officials focused on disseminating some provisions of the Law on Road Traffic Safety and Order; causes, subjects causing traffic accidents, consequences caused by traffic accidents; things to do when participating in traffic; the role and responsibility of women in mobilizing relatives and the community to participate in traffic safety... Through the communication sessions, women are not only disseminated with legal knowledge, guided on safe traffic participation skills, but also aroused in their sense of responsibility towards themselves, their relatives and the community.

Attending this media session with local women, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan in Phu Dong ward (Tuy Hoa city) shared: After listening to the media, I will remind my husband and children not to drive after drinking alcohol, always wear a helmet when riding a motorbike or scooter; at the same time, encourage women in the neighborhood not to do business on the sidewalk... I realize that maintaining traffic safety is also maintaining family happiness.

It can be said that women are playing an important role in promoting traffic safety through education and propaganda activities and safe traffic participation. However, to reduce traffic accidents involving women, it is necessary to continue to strengthen education, propaganda and implement measures to support women to participate in traffic more safely.

Ms. Pham Thi Thu Huyen, Head of the Propaganda Department of the Provincial Women's Union, said: In recent years, women's unions at all levels in the province have actively launched a movement for women to implement traffic culture criteria such as: voluntarily complying with the law; not encroaching on the roadside; not leaving straw or dangerous obstacles on the road; committing to wearing helmets for children... This is not only a movement but also a cultural campaign, transforming each small habit, each individual behavior, contributing to creating a safer and more friendly traffic environment for the community.

“Traffic accidents spare no one. But if every woman becomes a regular propagandist, mobilizing her family and community to participate in safe traffic, traffic culture will be nurtured from the smallest things,” said Ms. Huyen.
