Project 8 on “Implementing gender equality and solving urgent issues for women and children” under the National Target Program (NTP) on socio -economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. The project was implemented by the Women's Union of Tien Phuoc district in coordination with the Women's Union of Tien Lap commune, initially changing the community's awareness of gender equality.
As an ethnic minority woman in Suoi Dua village, Ms. Pham Thi Thu Ba - a member of the Co Ethnic Women's Club, has worked hard to study and become a teacher at Tien Lap Primary School for nearly 10 years. In addition to her work at school, Ms. Thu Ba and her husband invested in improving the land for growing acacia in Cay Tac hole in Suoi Dua village, planting more than 100 durian trees, 50 mangosteen trees, and dwarf banana trees with an investment cost of nearly 85 million VND.
She shared: “Thanks to being a teacher, I have the opportunity to go out and exchange professional expertise as well as visit garden economic development models. Thanks to that, I boldly invested in growing fruit trees, and my family received support from the district with 72 million VND from Resolution 35 of the Provincial People's Council on developing garden economy and farm economy.”

Suoi Dua village currently has 42 Co ethnic households, including 37 women. The Women's Union of Tien Phuoc district and Tien Lap commune have supported women in Suoi Dua village to establish a Co ethnic women's club with about 30 members. The women are equipped with knowledge about gender equality, marriage and family, knowledge about reproductive health care and family planning, etc.
In particular, since the Women's Union of Tien Lap commune implemented Project 8, many practical contents have been organized such as the Co village startup festival, propaganda and communication campaigns to raise awareness of gender equality, training on transferring scientific and technical advances in livestock and crop farming...
Ms. Truong Thi Nghia - President of the Women's Union of Tien Lap commune informed that Suoi Dua village, from having 34/42 households classified as poor, in recent years, 27 households have escaped poverty and become entrepreneurs, and 100% of children of school age are able to go to school.
“The Commune Women's Union regularly coordinates with other associations and organizations to actively propagate and mobilize people in Suoi Dua village to promote their internal strength according to the motto of people rising up from poverty with the support of the State, which has spread widely and brought about high efficiency.
Our experience is to shift from providing livelihood support in a “free” manner to providing it with conditions, so that people can change their awareness, not rely on the State, and have the consciousness to strive and make efforts to develop production and improve their lives. Thanks to that, families in the village have accessed knowledge, improved farming and livestock raising methods, contributing to improving economic efficiency and sustainable poverty reduction,” said Ms. Nghia.
