Vietnamese women marrying foreigners is increasing
This is the data in the National Report on Civil Registration and Statistics for the period 2021-2024 just announced by the General Statistics Office ( Ministry of Finance ) on April 25.
According to this report, in 2021, the whole country had only more than 2,000 marriages with foreign elements, accounting for about 0.5% of the total number of marriages in the country.
In 2022, the number of marriages with foreign elements was nearly 14,000, accounting for 1.9%. This number increased to 19,000 in 2023, accounting for 2.8%.
The majority of marriages involving foreign elements are cases of Vietnamese women marrying foreigners, about 89.1%. The number of cases of Vietnamese men marrying foreigners accounts for only 10.5%.
The number and proportion of cases of foreigners permanently residing in Vietnam registering to marry other foreigners is insignificant.
Vietnamese women who marry foreigners mainly marry people with Taiwanese (China), mainland Chinese, Korean and American nationality, accounting for 77%.
Of these, the proportion of marriages with Taiwanese (China) people reached the highest, 21.4%, followed by the United States, 19.9%; South Korea, 18.1% and China, 17.6%.
Vietnamese people who marry foreigners tend to marry later than other couples.

Among women, the proportion of Vietnamese women marrying Vietnamese men is highest in the 20-24 age group, at 33.4%; followed by the 25-29 age group, at 27.2%, and decreases sharply from the 30-34 age group onwards.
For the group of women married to foreigners, the highest proportion was observed in the 25-29 age group, with 24.2%; followed by the 30-34 age group and the 20-24 age group with 20.0% and 18.5%.
After the age of 35, the proportion of women marrying foreigners also decreased, but the decrease was not as great as that of women marrying Vietnamese men.
Women who marry Korean or Chinese men tend to be relatively young. More than 70% are under 30 years old and about 14% are between 15 and 19 years old.
Meanwhile, women married to Americans and Taiwanese men are older, especially the group of women married to Americans.
In this group, the number of women who got married at a very young age, under 20 years old, accounted for a very small proportion, 2.1%. The majority of women who married Americans were between 25 and 39 years old, 59.7%.
After age 40, the proportion of women marrying Americans declined but remained much higher than that of women marrying Koreans or Chinese, 25.3 percent compared with 4.1 percent for Koreans and 3.7 percent for Chinese.
Meanwhile, the sex ratio at birth in Vietnam is still quite high, in the period 2021-2024 the sex ratio at birth is at 109.8 boys/100 girls. In 2024 alone, this ratio will be 110.7 boys/100 girls. While the balance is 104 - 106 boys/100 girls.
Along with the gender gap at birth and the increasing number of marriages involving foreign elements, there is also the issue of men being at risk of having difficulty getting married in the future./.
