Phu Quoc invests heavily, creates difference to 'attract' tourists

According to the Kien Giang Department of Tourism, in the first 5 months of 2025, Phu Quoc city continued to affirm its position as the leading tourist destination of the province, the leading attractive destination in the region, with more than 3.5 million visitors, up 30.5% over the same period; total revenue from tourism was 17,926 billion VND, up more than 87%.

Director of Kien Giang Department of Tourism Bui Quoc Thai shared that tourists to Ngoc Island in the first 5 months of the year accounted for nearly 63% of the total number of visitors in the province and foreign tourists accounted for 98.9%. These figures not only reflect the attractiveness of Kien Giang and Phu Quoc tourism, but also vivid evidence of the tireless efforts of Kien Giang tourism industry, business community, and the coordination and association in tourism development of localities and regions across the country.

Mr. Nguyen Vu Khac Huy, Permanent Vice Chairman of Kien Giang Province Tourism Association, shared that international visitors to Phu Quoc in the first months of this year, in addition to tourists from traditional markets, there were also visitors from India, Korea, Taiwan, Cambodia, etc.

In particular, Cambodian and many other foreign tourists enter through Ha Tien International Border Gate, Giang Thanh main border gate (Kien Giang), then travel by high-speed boat to Phu Quoc in quite large numbers, sometimes up to thousands of tourists a day. It is expected that from now until the end of the year, international tourists to the Pearl Island will continue to increase sharply, "explode" compared to 2024, because many international flights connecting to Phu Quoc will be opened and restored, and exploited again after a period of suspension.

Viet Contact Travel is a travel agency that brings many groups of Northern and international tourists to Phu Quoc, especially Indian tourists. However, Ms. Luyen expressed: "In addition to the "concretization" that is taking place quite quickly, I think the Phu Quoc government needs to focus on "greening" the Pearl Island in tourism development to retain and attract more international visitors. In particular, the beaches are already clean and beautiful, the water is clear, so it is necessary to preserve and protect the environment here to make it more fresh and friendly".

"The issue of waste and wastewater needs to be thoroughly treated, not to cause environmental pollution on the island; the locality needs to regularly carry out "green campaigns", especially cleaning up garbage on the main roads of Phu Quoc to create a good impression in the eyes of tourists. Along with protecting forest resources and planting trees, Phu Quoc focuses on green transformation, especially investing in the rapid development of electric vehicles to replace vehicles using gasoline fuel", Ms. Nguyen Thi Luyen further emphasized.

The Association coordinates with relevant departments and units to focus on introducing new features of Phu Quoc, especially to international visitors, to increase the number of visitors and attract international visitors with high spending ability.

"We expect and are certain that before, during and after APEC 2027, new flight routes and tourism markets in new countries and territories around the world will be opened and Phu Quoc tourism will develop steadily in terms of visitor sources," Mr. Huy added.
