Reviving a cultural tradition

A bullfight in Mexico

This tradition is bullfighting. The debate over whether or not bullfighting should be banned pits those who support maintaining this cultural tradition against those who advocate for animal protection and fight for a ban on bullfighting. In June 2022, courts in several Mexican states (the country has 32 states) ruled against bullfighting. However, this ruling was recently overturned by the Mexican Supreme Court. Therefore, there are no longer any legal obstacles to the continued organization of bullfighting in Mexico.

Bullfighting first appeared in the 13th century, in the 14th century. In the 14th century, Spanish colonists introduced this form of competition to Mexico, and Mexico gradually became the world's leading bullfighting destination after Spain. Over the centuries, bullfighting has become a distinctive cultural tradition in Mexico, widely admired and supported by its people. The Plaza de Toros bullfighting arena in Mexico has a capacity of over 41,000 spectators, creating a fervent atmosphere like a major festival. In Europe today, bullfighting is still held in Spain, Portugal, and France. Even in these places, there is a fierce struggle between animal rights advocates for banning bullfighting and those determined to maintain the tradition.

That's the legal situation in Mexico. But looking at the broader picture, there are two other major issues. The first is the long-standing cultural tradition spanning hundreds of years and the pressure from the modern world. Animal protection has long been a major issue in the modern world, complex and politically and socially sensitive in many parts of the world. People may or may not agree with using laws to sanction everything related to animal protection for the purpose of animal protection. The state and society, individuals and organizations, cannot ignore this issue. This means that, in this respect, Mexico must accept, and cannot avoid, the conflict between continuing ancient traditions in the modern world and the modern world's demands to end or change those traditions. The aforementioned ruling by the Mexican Supreme Court shows that the court there has sided with ancient traditions. The inevitable consequence of this ruling is that Mexico will now be plunged back into the old cultural battle, but will once again have to contend with pressure from the outside world.

The second issue is how to understand and approach the cultural implications of bullfighting traditions and the calls to ban bullfighting to protect animals. For people in Mexico and other places around the world where bullfighting is held, bullfighting is a cultural activity and tradition, reflecting both the history and character of the people in those places. Therefore, bullfighting has been able to exist and exert its influence for such a long time. Meanwhile, for those who call for and fight for a ban on bullfighting, bullfighting is seen as a cruel act of animal abuse and brutal torture. So the question here is: how should we understand the cultural implications in this context to be correct?
