Recently, a Chinese car company named Geely conducted an unprecedentedly challenging experiment to demonstrate the superior capabilities of their electric vehicle (EV) battery packs. Photo: @Geely.

Here, Geely took a sample of the battery on the Galaxy E5 electric car, the official name of this battery is the Aegis Gold Brick Battery, and then ran it over with a 36-ton ZTZ-59D medium tank to see how well their electric car battery can withstand large external impacts and extreme compression. However, the final results showed that the Aegis Gold Brick battery pack maintained its structural integrity, with no swelling, no scratches, no leaks, and no fire or explosion, despite being subjected to the enormous compression pressure from a 36-ton tank. Photo: @Geely.

The experiment is also believed to be related to China's new battery certification standard, GB38031-2025, which requires electric vehicle batteries to meet higher safety standards, specifically fast charging cycles, protection against thermal runaway, and undercarriage crash resistance. Through this experiment, the Aegis Gold Brick battery pack also achieved IPX9K ingress protection standard, thanks to the use of cell-to-body integration technology and a 2.6mm thick sandwich-structure bottom plate, along with other safety features including liquid-electric separation, insulation, heat dissipation and other protection measures. This is arguably the first test of its kind, as the safety of electric vehicle batteries is typically proven through crash tests, cycle tests, charging tests, or even puncture tests. However, testing the safety of an electric vehicle battery under the extreme compression pressure of a 36-ton tank is a very unique approach. Photo: @Geely.

Geely previously stated that the Aegis Gold Brick battery pack is made from high-quality, flexible materials to maintain durability. A heat-resistant aluminum oxide coating is also incorporated into it to prevent cell rupture, and helps prevent heat loss in the event of a puncture. Photo: @Geely.

Reports reveal that, according to China’s current national standards, EV batteries must undergo 24 safety tests. However, Geely has conducted 36 Aegis Golden Brick battery test scenarios, exceeding China’s testing requirements. Geely also plans to expand its battery safety technology patent portfolio to the entire domestic electric vehicle industry. Photo: @Geely.
