Dien Bien Phu is a strategically important stronghold that controls a large area of the Northwest and Upper Laos.
For our troops, Dien Bien Phu was the largest siege battle ever; it took place in rugged mountainous terrain, with difficult artillery maneuver routes and short preparation time; but it had very important military, political and diplomatic significance.
In early December 1953, on the basis of firmly grasping all enemy plots and actions, scientifically analyzing and assessing the situation, the Politburo decided to launch the Dien Bien Phu Campaign and approved the combat plan.
