Clip of Mr. Truong frying cakes attracts viewers

About 5 years ago, the fried banana shop on Truong Cong Dinh Street (Phu Loi Ward, Can Tho City) of Mr. Le Quoc Truong suddenly attracted attention on social networks with livestream sessions (live broadcasts) with thousands of viewers.

From a small shop selling to people around the area, the name " Soc Trang fried bananas" has gradually become familiar to TikTok users. Currently, the 35-year-old male shop owner owns a TikTok channel with 312,000 followers and more than 77,000 likes.

Before becoming famous, Mr. Truong worked as a supermarket employee in the area, occasionally helping his wife sell fried bananas in his spare time. The turning point came one day when he had to watch the store while his wife and two children went back to their hometown.

“I tied my phone to an electric pole to broadcast live, introducing the banana frying process and chatting ‘to relieve boredom’. For some reason, a lot of people came to watch,” he said, adding that after that time, the number of customers coming to buy cakes increased.

To create the crispy crust, the owner mixes many types of flour according to his own recipe, mainly rice flour, wheat flour, turmeric starch, and sugar. The frying oil is changed regularly, and the crumbs are skimmed off constantly to maintain clarity. The bananas chosen for frying are black Siamese bananas, which are flattened before cooking, but not pressed too hard to avoid crushing or making the cake too thin.

The bananas are fried twice. The first time, they are coated with 3 layers of flour and then topped with black sesame. After resting for 5-10 minutes, the cakes are fried again over high heat to extract the oil and create a crispy crust.

“Before livestreaming, my shop sold nearly a hundred pieces a day, mainly serving locals. Since becoming more well-known, the number of customers has tripled. After only half a month of livestreaming, I opened a cart selling fried dough,” Mr. Truong shared.

Up to now, he has maintained 2 livestream sessions every day, each session lasting 2-3 hours. In addition to selling cakes at the shop, he also closes orders for 50-100kg of fried flour per month, priced at 40,000 VND/kg.

The restaurant's special "cashier"

Coming to the fried banana shop, the first thing that makes customers excited is not only the aroma of the cakes, but also the appearance of "Bear" - a 4-year-old dog of the German Shepherd breed.

Mr. Truong said that he adopted Gau from an acquaintance when it was a baby. Since coming to the shop, Gau has been especially well-behaved, rarely mischievous, and very obedient. Therefore, Mr. Truong taught it some simple habits, initially just for fun.

When Bear was 3 years old, he taught him how to beg for food with a small basin. Every time he wanted to eat, he had to sit up straight, hold the basin in front of him, and wait for orders. Bear learned very quickly, to the point that whenever he heard Mr. Truong call, he would immediately follow without any hesitation.

From there, he came up with the idea of letting Bear “help sell” as a way to create a fun highlight for customers. Every time someone came to buy cakes, Bear would run out from inside and use his mouth to receive money. Whatever money the customer gave him, he would carefully pick it up with his mouth and run to the back of his owner. After finishing his task, he would run out immediately and continue sitting in front of the door as a dedicated “cashier”.

Many first-time visitors burst out laughing with delight, some even deliberately paid slowly so they could watch Bear tilt his head in anticipation. The dog’s cleverness and gentle personality made the fried banana shop more special, creating a familiar feeling like visiting a small family.

Gau’s daily hobbies are eating bread, drinking soft drinks and coffee. Mr. Truong’s wife also created a Facebook page, regularly sharing Gau’s pictures and receiving hundreds of thousands of views.

For Mr. Truong's family, Bear is not only a pet but also a "companion" that helps make the restaurant more fun and brings unforgettable experiences to diners.
