On September 25, 2024, continuing his activities in New York, the United States, General Secretary and President To Lam received Senator Chris Coons, a Democrat, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Foreign Affairs , Foreign Operations and Related Programs (Appropriations Committee), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Intellectual Property (Judiciary Committee), and also Chairman of the Special Committee on Ethics and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, US Congress.
At the meeting, General Secretary and President To Lam shared his assessment of the special relationship between Vietnam and the United States, considering it a model of efforts to mend and build post-war relations. With the upgrading of relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the Vietnam-US relationship has truly entered a new page. In order for the relationship between the two countries to reach the level it has today, Vietnam greatly appreciates the great contributions of the US Congress as well as "icebreakers" such as the late Senator John McCain, Senator Patrick Leahy, Senator John Kerry... in mending and promoting the relationship between the two countries.
The General Secretary and President affirmed that Vietnam has always been consistent with its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, diversification, being a friend, a reliable partner, an active and responsible member of the international community; especially attaching importance to Vietnam's development and growth goals in the new era. The General Secretary and President was pleased to acknowledge the positive results in implementing the Vietnam - US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework over the past year and hoped that the US Congress would continue to support the strong and stable development of the new partnership framework. Looking forward to the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2025, the General Secretary and President hoped that the two countries would continue to actively and effectively implement the Joint Statement on upgrading relations in 2023, especially the US's continued exchange and coordination to soon recognize Vietnam's Market Economy Status; At the same time, closely cooperate and actively and responsibly contribute to the common work of the international community, responding to global issues.
Senator Chris Coons thanked the General Secretary and President for taking the time to receive him; affirmed that he considered Vietnam a leading partner in the region and was interested in strengthening the relationship between the two countries. The Senator also shared his joy at the upgrading of the relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the many substantive progresses in the implementation over the past time, including increased exchanges and contacts between the legislative bodies of the two countries. This is an important basis for the two sides to strengthen mutual understanding and promote cooperation in all channels and fields, including new potential fields such as clean energy, liquefied natural gas (LNG), digital transformation, high technology, environment, climate change response, etc. The Senator emphasized that in his position, he will continue to promote the implementation of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership; promote the traditions left by previous generations of senators, especially in cooperation to overcome the consequences of war.
On this occasion, General Secretary and President To Lam also expressed his sincere thanks for the timely support of the American people for the Vietnamese people in their efforts to overcome the severe consequences of the recent super typhoon Yagi./.
