Lao Cai is a mountainous, border province, home to many ethnic groups, most of whom are ethnic minorities. The large area, difficult transportation, harsh climate, and many deprivations in people's lives have caused many obstacles to the education sector. However, with the special attention of the Party and the State, and efforts to overcome difficulties, the Lao Cai education sector has gradually affirmed its position and become a bright spot in the Northern midlands and mountainous region and the whole country.
Focus on investing in infrastructure - the foundation for change
In mid-November, A Mu Sung commune was immersed in deep cold. It was a day when the Northeast monsoon was intensifying, and the entire border area was covered in thick fog. Teacher La Van Liem - Principal of A Mu Sung Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, wrapped a warm scarf around his neck and took us down the winding slope from the school to Tung Sang village.

On the large plot of land, excavators and bulldozers are busy leveling the ground. Teacher Liem shared: "When the boarding school is completed, teachers and students will be able to study in a spacious, modern school. Education in the A Mu Sung border area will certainly have many improvements...".
That joy is even more meaningful when knowing that A Mu Sung Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities has nearly 600 students each year, of which nearly 400 are boarding students. The school is lacking nearly 30 classrooms, functional rooms, and boarding rooms; many rooms are degraded; some items even collapsed and sank after storm No. 3 in 2024. The construction of a new boarding school according to Conclusion Notice No. 81 of the Politburo has opened up great hope for teachers and students at the front line of the border.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tam - Deputy Head of the Economic Department of A Mu Sung commune said: Building a border school is a major policy of the Party and the Government, therefore, when selected to implement, we seriously implemented, ensuring progress in site clearance as well as construction, ensuring completion of the project before August 30, 2026 according to regulations.
In addition to A Mu Sung, Lao Cai province has 8 other localities, including Lao Cai ward and communes: Pha Long, Muong Khuong, Ban Lau, Si Ma Cai, Y Ty, Bat Xat, Trinh Tuong, which will also be invested in building inter-level primary and secondary boarding schools in the period 2025 - 2027 with a total capital of 1,480 billion VND.

The construction of border boarding schools is just one of many major policies demonstrating the Party and State's care for education in the mountainous region of Lao Cai.
In recent years, through the National Target Program 1719 and other capital sources, the whole province has allocated more than 1,016 billion VND to build, renovate and upgrade schools.
In 2025 alone, Lao Cai will implement 200 projects, mainly building classrooms, subject classrooms, and boarding houses to meet the increasing teaching and learning needs at schools.
Improve the quality of comprehensive education
The infrastructure is increasingly invested in to be spacious and modern, the living conditions of boarding students and teachers in the highlands are improved, the quality of education in the highlands of Lao Cai also has positive changes. The work of popularizing education and eliminating illiteracy has contributed to raising the intellectual level of the people.
In fact, the province's educational picture is increasingly bright. The comprehensive quality of education has been improved from low to high areas. The whole province currently has 1,046 educational establishments, of which 765 kindergartens and general schools have been recognized as meeting national standards (147 schools have met national standards at level 2), contributing to the completion of the province's national target program on new rural construction.

Lao Cai province is a pioneer in the boarding school model and many other models, such as "schools linked to practice", "STEM education model"... Thereby, contributing to maintaining the rate of students attending school regularly, especially in disadvantaged communes.
The work of discovering and nurturing excellent students continues to affirm Lao Cai's position in the mountainous region. At the 2024-2025 national excellent student competition, the province's students won 128 prizes (including 2 first prizes, 16 second prizes, 45 third prizes and 65 consolation prizes - an increase of 25 prizes compared to the previous school year); 1 student won a bronze medal at the Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (student Nguyen Huy Phong, Lao Cai Specialized High School) and 6/6 projects participating in the National Science and Technology Competition won prizes.
Among the localities that have done well in improving the quality of education and building standard schools, Lao Cai ward is a typical example. The ward currently has 30 schools with 524 classes and more than 17,500 students; the rate of schools meeting national standards is 95.26%, of which 65.2% are at level 2.
Talking to us, Ms. Tran Thi Thuy Dung, Vice Chairman of Lao Cai Ward People's Committee said: These results mark the continuous efforts of teachers and students of the schools. Schools are always actively promoting information technology, expanding foreign language education, developing new models such as STEM, connected classrooms, thereby promoting the emulation movement "Teach well - learn well".

The progress of Lao Cai's education sector today is the result of the deep concern of the Party and State; the strong direction of the province; the consensus of the people and the spirit of overcoming difficulties of the team of teachers and students in the mountainous and border areas.
In the coming time, the province will continue to effectively implement projects and policies on education development for the period 2026 - 2030, projects on improving the quality of education in disadvantaged areas, innovating vocational education and applying information technology in education and training, striving to further develop Lao Cai education.
