On September 17, Director of Quang Ngai General Hospital Le Van Thieu said the unit is treating a couple in Duc Pho town who were poisoned by eating puffer fish.
Previously, on the afternoon of September 16, Mr. Nguyen Hoi (born in 1959) and his wife, Ms. Le Thi Kim Hue (born in 1966), both residing in Pho Thanh ward, Duc Pho town, were taken to Quang Ngai General Hospital in a state of shock, numbness of the tip of the tongue, and then numbness of the whole body.
The husband's symptoms worsened and he was admitted to the hospital in cardiac arrest. The patient was resuscitated and transferred to the Intensive Care and Poison Control Department in a deep coma and respiratory arrest requiring mechanical ventilation.
The wife's symptoms were milder and she was treated according to the food poisoning protocol.
According to information from the patient and his family, on the afternoon of September 16, Mr. Hoi and his wife ate food made from puffer fish. About 2 hours after eating, both of them showed the above symptoms and were taken to the emergency room by their relatives.
By the morning of September 17, the husband's health had improved. The patient was conscious, breathing on his own, and his vital signs were stable. However, due to his poor health and underlying lung disease, the patient continued to receive intensive treatment. The wife's health has stabilized.
Recently, although information about the toxicity of puffer fish has been disseminated and warned by authorities, in Quang Ngai many fishermen or people still intentionally prepare and eat dishes made from puffer fish, leading to serious poisoning.
According to doctors, there is no specific treatment for pufferfish poisoning. People who are poisoned by pufferfish will have a major impact on their health and life. Therefore, to prevent pufferfish poisoning, the most effective measure is to not eat any food made from pufferfish./.
