The school's strong research groups were selected through the evaluation of the review board including scientists such as: Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duc Chien (Hanoi University of Science and Technology), Prof. Dr. Tran Dai Lam (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), Prof. Dr. Dao Tien Khoa (Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute), Prof. Dr. Mai Thanh Tung (Hanoi University of Science and Technology) and Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hai Nam (Hanoi University of Pharmacy).

The 8 strong research team leaders selected this time are all leading scientists with many international publications and rich experience in leading successful research teams such as: Prof. Dr. Pham Thanh Huy (representative young scientist of 1,000 years of Thang Long - Hanoi, 2010), Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Hieu (Ta Quang Buu Award, 2016), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phung Van Dong (Ta Quang Buu Award for young scientists, 2016), Dr. Raja Das (JSPS Scholar - Japan, 2018 and 2019).

In particular, Phenikaa University's strong research groups are divided into two types: Basic research groups and Applied research groups.

Research activities at Phenikaa University

In the 2019 selection round, 7 out of 8 strong research groups were established as basic research groups, including 6 research groups on natural sciences and engineering, technology and 1 research group on social sciences and humanities. The only research group in the field of social sciences and humanities is led by Dr. Vuong Quan Hoang, Director of the University's Center for Interdisciplinary Social Science Research (ISR), who has many international publications in the field of social sciences. The first applied research group at Phenikaa University is the optoelectronics and photonics research group of Prof. Dr. Pham Thanh Huy - who is often mentioned by the scientific community in building a model of research cooperation and technology transfer between universities and businesses (typically successful applied research at Rang Dong Light Bulb and Thermos Joint Stock Company).

The specific requirement for a strong research group in the field of basic research is to publish at least 5 scientific works each year as articles in Q1 journals (according to SCImago Journal Rankings standards), or 8 scientific works in ISI/Scopus international journals, of which at least 3 are Q1. Each Q1 scientific work can be replaced by a monograph. For a strong research group in the field of applied research, within 3 years, it is required to transfer at least 1 technological process to enterprises (with a total technology transfer cost of over 500 million VND), or successfully register 2 inventions/utility solutions domestically or internationally.

The investment budget for equipment in particular for each group is 4 billion VND for the first 3 years and the budget is unlimited for research groups with the goal of developing applied technology. The activities of strong research groups will be closely linked with the training and research activities of the faculties and especially the 3 research institutes of the school: Phenikaa Institute for Advanced Studies (PIAS - focusing on basic scientific research), Phenikaa Research and Technology Institute (PRATI - focusing on applied science and technology development), Nano Research Institute (PHENA - research on materials and nanotechnology).

Phenikaa University is a member of Phenikaa Group – an industrial manufacturing group of ecological materials and high-tech products. Currently, the University has 21 training programs in 4 majors, including natural sciences, engineering and technology, health, economics and social sciences and humanities.
