History has recorded an interesting fact, that is, the first letter and document that President Ho Chi Minh sent to the highest leader of a country was a letter to the President of the United States. The last letter and document in his revolutionary life was also sent to the President of the United States.
The letters, telegrams, articles... have been officially published, comprehensively and prominently reflecting President Ho Chi Minh's efforts in seeking, establishing relations and carrying out Vietnam's diplomatic struggle with the United States of America from the early years of his wandering to find a way to save the country until the final years of his leadership of the Vietnamese revolution, aiming to regain independence and freedom for the nation.
The book "Uncle Ho with the US Presidents" by Associate Professor, Dr. Vo Van Loc consists of 8 chapters, reflecting two stages of President Ho Chi Minh's diplomatic struggle through sending letters, telegrams... to 7 US Presidents, from Wilson, Roosevelt, Truman to Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon.
During the period 1919 - 1946, Uncle Ho sent messages to three Presidents Wilson, Roosevelt, Truman, always expressing trust, sincerity, patience, reason, and affection, wishing to establish friendly relations with the United States. Unfortunately, the expectations of leader Ho Chi Minh and the Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam did not come true when the US Presidents did not receive the messages he sent.
During the period 1947 - 1969, through four Presidents, from Eisenhower, Kennedy to Johnson, Nixon, the United States moved from indirect intervention to directly causing a war that violated the territorial integrity, national self-determination, independence and freedom of the Vietnamese people. This was what forced President Ho Chi Minh to change his attitude. He continued to send letters, telegrams... to carry out a flexible diplomatic struggle but firmly condemned and criticized the US government's acts of aggression; at the same time, he continued the goodwill and efforts of the Vietnamese Government to find a peaceful solution, ending the war and bloodshed for both nations.
The book clearly shows that President Ho Chi Minh was a genius diplomat, a revolutionary leader with a single-minded goal of “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom”, demonstrated by his correct assessment of the important role of the United States in international issues during the diplomatic process, to his flexibility, suppleness, but firmness and principles in relations with the United States depending on actual conditions; always maintaining the initiative and always promoting peace and friendship in international relations./.
