Cristiano Ronaldo said he did not attend Diogo Jota's funeral because he did not want to turn the ceremony into "a circus". |
The Portuguese star shared this in a new interview with journalist Piers Morgan, a few months after Jota and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash in Portugal in July.
Ronaldo's absence at the funeral caused controversy, as many of Jota's teammates at Liverpool and the Portuguese national team were present. However, CR7 insisted he felt at peace with his decision. "People criticized me a lot, but I didn't care. When your conscience is clear, you don't have to worry about what other people say," Ronaldo said.
He added that since his father's death, he has not been to the cemetery. "When you know me, you know that wherever I appear, attention will be focused on me. I don't want that. I don't want a funeral to be a place where people interview or talk about football," Ronaldo shared.
Jota's funeral was attended by coach Arne Slot, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson and former captains Jordan Henderson and James Milner. From the Portuguese national team, Bruno Fernandes represented a group of players to say goodbye to their unfortunate teammate.
Diogo Jota left a big mark in Liverpool's shirt, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup. At the national team level, he made 49 appearances and won the Nations League twice. Jota's departure was a big loss for Portuguese football, and Ronaldo chose to pay his respects quietly, avoiding any noise.
