Previously, TFF conducted a comprehensive investigation of 571 referees in Turkish professional leagues, the results showed that 371 of them had sports betting accounts and 152 referees actively participated in betting.
"Refereeing is an honorable profession. Anyone who tarnishes that honor will never be involved in Turkish football again," TFF President İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu said about the incident.
TFF also revealed that 22 referees, including 7 main referees and 15 assistant referees currently on duty in Türkiye's top league, were involved in betting and were suspended.
Notably, the investigation results showed that there were 10 referees who participated in betting more than 10,000 times, in particular, one referee who bet up to 18,227 times.
Mr. İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu also confirmed that up to 42 referees had bet on more than 1,000 football matches, but did not clarify whether any of them were suspected of betting on matches they refereed.
The case has now been transferred to Türkiye's Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office for investigation.
