This morning (April 1), the Vietnam Mathematical Society in collaboration with Saigon University organized the opening ceremony of the 31st National Mathematical Olympiad for students.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Hoang Quan, President of Saigon University, said that this year's Student Mathematical Olympiad for students has 90 delegations from academies and universities. Nearly 650 students registered to take part in 749 algebra and analysis exams from April 1 to April 5. Previously, the exam for students took place from March 8 and 9 in the form of on-site and online supervision with the exam consisting of 4-6 small problems designed according to the thinking circuit including the following contents: arithmetic, geometry, algebra, analysis and combinatorics.
"The exam is a big playground for students and pupils nationwide who share a passion for mathematics. This is also a place to nurture and discover mathematical talents. After 30 domestic Olympiads, many candidates have matured and achieved many successes from the International Mathematical Olympiad, contributing to raising the position of Vietnamese mathematics in the region and the world," Associate Professor, Dr. Quan shared.

Associate Professor, Dr. Doan Trung Cuong, Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Mathematical Society, also said: "The Mathematical Olympiad for Students organized by the Vietnam Mathematical Society has become a meaningful annual event for students to gather, exchange and compete in the field of mathematics. The competition contributes to improving the quality of teaching and learning mathematics, promoting the passion for mathematics and the learning movement of students, and at the same time contributing to discovering and nurturing mathematical talents."
According to Associate Professor Dr. Doan Trung Cuong, the universities participating in this year's exam are very diverse. Not only are they diverse in terms of geography, but they also belong to many different fields, including: science, technology, education, health, economics, military, and security. "This is a vivid demonstration of the popularity of mathematics as an important science and a powerful support for the research, application, and development of other sciences," said Associate Professor Cuong.
Emphasizing the importance of mathematics, Associate Professor, Dr. Doan Trung Cuong added: "Mathematics is not only the foundation of science and technology or other scientific fields, but also an important thinking tool that helps us solve practical problems in life. In this day and age, mathematics becomes part of the key to participating in the 4.0 revolution and taking advantage of the achievements of that revolution to develop the country."
With 90 university delegations participating in the competition, the Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Mathematical Society said that this is an impressive number because since the first time it was held in 1993 with only 3 universities participating, 2025 is one of the few years that the number of delegations has reached 90 or more in the history of 31 organizations of the competition. Since the last time the Mathematical Olympiad was held in the South in 2003, after more than two decades, this competition was held in Ho Chi Minh City this year on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the National Reunification Day (March 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025).
