As we know, Malaysia has just upgraded its squad with a series of expensive players from Europe and South America. They are Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Rodrigo Holgado, Jon Irazabal and Facundo Garces. Most of them are valued at 1 million USD or more, a very impressive number compared to the average level of Southeast Asian football.
Their presence will significantly strengthen the Malaysian national team before the match against Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. But it also brings many doubts. Media from neighboring countries have questioned the origins of these players, saying that they may not meet the requirements of inheriting blood from their grandparents and parents as stipulated by FIFA. Many opinions have called on FIFA to investigate the Malaysian Football Federation.
In response to this move, Mr. Syed Yazid Syed Omar reacted strongly: “In my opinion, we should not be caught up in accusations from outside. Maybe they are jealous and dissatisfied with the revolution taking place in Malaysia.

I have faith in the management and I am confident that the national team management has done a lot of research before bringing this group of players into the squad. Everyone knows that Tunku Ismail (Johor FC president who set up a network to find naturalized players for Malaysia) has close ties with football all over the world . He and Rob Friend (Malaysia National Team CEO) have done an excellent job and we should support them.”
Former national team player Zainal Abidin Hassan also shared the same view. He said that Malaysia is doing the right thing and has nothing to fear. “Many people will question and be unhappy but this is a legal issue and is allowed by FIFA. We have considered it carefully and have to get approval before using these naturalized players.”
