Responding to the press, a representative of the Colosseum Archaeological Park confirmed that the giant ancient arch was struck by lightning during a severe storm on September 3.
The images show many stone blocks lying around this ancient structure dating back to the 4th century.
"All debris has been recovered and secured. Damage assessment work has begun," the representative said.
The archway was damaged in the southern part and is being actively repaired by the relevant parties.
“Lightning struck the gate and we saw rocks falling down,” a tourist said, pointing to a large rock lying on the ground.
Roberto Gualtieri, Mayor of Rome, said this was a particularly unusual weather phenomenon.
"The event that happened in Rome was truly unprecedented, because it had such great power and was concentrated in a short time, in several areas, starting from the city center," he said.
The Arch of Constantine is about 25m high, 26m wide and 8m thick. This work is considered a masterpiece of ancient Roman stone sculpture.
