Dr. Tran Manh Thanh - Principal of Bach Viet Polytechnic College - confirmed that this is the first time in the school's more than 20-year history that a student has graduated with a perfect score.

Find yourself

On the morning of December 7, Hoang Van Tu (24 years old, living in Dong Nai ) was one of 500 students receiving their graduation certificates at the school's honor ceremony. Joy shone in the eyes of Tu and his relatives. During his high school years, Tu studied at Tam Hiep High School (Dong Nai).

Graduating from high school in 2018, Tu was admitted to the thermal engineering major at a large public university in Thu Duc City (HCMC).

"At that time, I really didn't have good career guidance. I didn't know what I wanted to study or what I wanted to do. I simply thought that engineering would be suitable for boys, and I studied math, physics, and chemistry in high school. The university I was accepted to was very prestigious. It was also close to Bien Hoa and Thu Duc," Tu said.

It was not until he started school that Tu began to feel that things were not right. The curriculum was much more demanding than his strength. Although he had studied natural sciences in high school, Tu struggled with subjects that required advanced math and physics knowledge at university level.

The peak of instability came at the beginning of the third year, when Tu had to go to the workshop to practice and intern more. Tu found that he was really not suited to the mechanical and industrial environment. Each hour in the workshop seemed endless to Tu. So Tu decided to stop the university path.

"If I continue, I'm not sure I can graduate from university. Or if I do graduate, I might have to struggle for 6 or 7 years. Most importantly, I'll have to do a job I don't love," Tu said.

After deciding to stop, Tu had more time to reflect on himself, read many books, and listen to many pieces of advice. Thanks to that, Tu discovered that he had a passion for learning foreign languages but had not paid attention to it for a long time. In particular, Tu really liked Chinese through the "action movies" that Tu had been passionate about since he was a child.

Where you study and what degree you get are not as important as whether you love what you do and are willing to give it your all.

"Fish in water"

Tu chose to study Chinese at college in 2022. Tu's family was quite sad and regretful at that time because their son had dropped out of a prestigious university even though he had studied until his third year. People around him also had some negative comments when Tu "moved down" to study at college.

In addition, Tu shared that studying the right major with you is like "a fish in water". During more than 2 years in college, you studied "crazily" without ever feeling tired. Because you are learning a new language, Tu spends a lot of time in contact with that language. In addition to the knowledge in school, you search for more Chinese books, documents and find people to communicate with in real life.

"Learning a language requires creating an environment to use that language. I try to create spaces outside of class where I can still read, listen, speak, and write Chinese. For example, instead of surfing Vietnamese social networks, I will now switch to Chinese, instead of reading Vietnamese books, I will start reading Chinese books," Tu said.

Tu said his secret to learning a foreign language is to create a habit and maintain it regularly. "Every day, I tell myself I have to study. No matter how little or how much, I encourage myself not to skip any day. If I skip just one day of studying, I can skip the second, third and the following days," Tu said.

It sounds simple, but Tu graduated with honors, achieving a perfect score of 4.0/4.0. Dr. Tran Manh Thanh said that the Chinese teachers were very impressed with Tu's ability to learn a foreign language. He absorbed new knowledge very quickly, combined with his diligence and hard work in studying, helping him progress quickly.

In addition to professional knowledge, Tu spends a lot of time on extracurricular activities, networking and expanding his thinking. Tu really likes courses or activities related to promoting "critical thinking", where you can practice thinking methods and multi-dimensional perspectives to apply to future work.

Currently, Tu's orientation is to work for Chinese businesses in Ho Chi Minh City or Dong Nai. After that, Tu can look for opportunities to study higher and continue to improve his foreign language skills.

"Parents should trust their children"

On her son's graduation day, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hiep - Tu's mother - said she was extremely moved when she saw how mature her son had become. She recalled the time when her son decided to drop out of university, she and her family felt very confused. When her son said he wanted to study Chinese at college, the family was confused again because he had turned straight from engineering to languages.

However, gradually, she realized that her child had truly found his passion. In addition, he also showed his determination when he took advantage of opportunities to work extra and helped his parents to some extent. "Now I see that passion is the most important thing. I think we should let our children pursue their passion. When they have found their passion, parents should trust and support them," said Ms. Hiep.
