Sinner ends Gasquet's career, extends winning streak at Roland Garros

Richard Gasquet’s 23-year career as a professional tennis player came to an end on the evening of May 29 at Roland Garros, when the Frenchman lost 3-6, 0-6, 4-6 to second seed Jannik Sinner in the second round. The victory not only put Sinner in the third round but also marked an important milestone in the Italian’s career.

In his 22nd appearance at the Paris clay-court Grand Slam, Gasquet was unable to find an answer to Sinner's powerful and accurate shots throughout the 1 hour and 58 minute match. With this result, the world No. 1 extended his Grand Slam winning streak to 16, becoming the first male player born in 1990 or later to achieve this impressive feat.

After the match, Sinner had some heartfelt words of gratitude for his opponent: “We have a good relationship off the court. We are from different generations, but this is his moment. Congratulations to his family, his team. Without the great people around every player, such an incredible career would not be possible.

He played in an incredible era of tennis and people will remember him, even after he retires." Gasquet recorded his only victory over a world No. 1 in Monte Carlo in 2005, when he beat Roger Federer.

In many ways, it's a meaningful coincidence that Gasquet, who has spent much of his career competing with the world's best, has ended up with the current world No. 1. The 38-year-old Frenchman has won 16 ATP Tour titles, reached a career-high ranking of No. 7 in the world, and holds the record for most match wins (610) by a Frenchman in the Open Era.

Sinner will face Jiri Lehcka in the third round. The Italian leads 2-0 in their head-to-head series. Lehecka overcame Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 to reach the third round at Roland Garros for the first time in his career.

After recording 2-0 wins over Arthur Rinderknech in the first round and Gasquet in the second, Sinner improved his record at Roland Garros to 18-5. He reached the semi-finals of the tournament last year before losing to Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling five-set match. The 23-year-old is aiming to become the first Italian men's singles champion in the Open era since Adriano Panatta in 1976.

“Obviously this is a very special place for me to play. Against Richard, we played here last year, it's always difficult. I'm usually happy to get to the third round. Thank you for making it fair,” said Sinner, who also beat Gasquet in Paris last year.

Despite the defeat, Gasquet still had his moments of magic, most notably when he used his classic one-handed backhand to create three break points on serve as Sinner served for the first set at 5-3, sending the French fans at Philippe Chatrier into a roar. However, Sinner saved all three points and did not face another break point en route to his dominant victory.
