3G waves in Vietnam will be turned off in 2028

According to the latest announcement from the Ministry of Information and Communications , Vietnam will stop broadcasting 3G mobile technology in September 2028. This decision is part of the roadmap to upgrade and improve the country's telecommunications infrastructure, in order to catch up with global technology trends.

Before turning off 3G, Vietnam will stop 2G technology in two specific phases:

September 2024: Stop serving subscribers using phones that only support 2G technology. This means that phones that do not support 3G or 4G will not be able to connect to the network.

September 2026: Completely stop the 2G system nationwide.

The discontinuation of 3G technology will take place in September 2028. This will allow network operators to focus on upgrading and expanding 4G and 5G network infrastructure, meeting users' increasing demand for speed and service quality.

A representative of the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Information and Communications, said that stopping 2G and 3G technology is necessary because these are outdated technologies, consume a lot of energy and have low frequency efficiency. Furthermore, 2G network equipment of mobile enterprises has fully depreciated, there is no longer a supply source for replacement and repair.

Currently, in the world , the trend of stopping 2G technology is happening strongly. As of June 2024, about 37 countries have completely turned off 2G networks and all countries plan to stop both of these technologies by 2030.

To ensure a smooth transition, the Ministry of Information and Communications has asked network operators to deploy 4G network infrastructure in areas where 2G will be turned off, focusing on developing infrastructure in remote, border and island areas. It is expected that by 2025, all villages with low signal but with national grid electricity will be covered by 4G mobile broadband.

In addition, the Ministry also directed telecommunications enterprises to develop specific communication plans, personalize communication work and support forms suitable for subscribers from poor and near-poor households to switch to using 4G technology phones or higher.
